  2. Agenda Improvement of the relationship between the National Coordinators and JSPS Project Leaders and members in member countries; Development of linkages among JSPS projects; Development of linkages with international programs; and Sourcing of funds to enhance program activities

Improvement of the relationships • Communication • Email news • NC, PL (members?) required • Some policies required • Involvement • Conscious effort (NCs, PLs) • Commitment • National conferences/meetings • More regular, frequent • Some constraints e.g. funds • Role of science focal institutions • Project integration

Development of linkages among JSPS projects • Indications from some presentations • Projects 1 & 2, Projects 1 & 3, Project 1 & Project 4 • among research groups in Project 3. • Monitoring & assessment of seagrass beds, combined remote sensing (e.g. Dr. Komatsu’s method) & sea truthing or diving, Seagrass Net, Seagrass Watch, useful in determining a common objective of determining seagrass biomass; also useful for the benthos group. • Benthos Group & Project 4 working on sediments, may collaborate. However, some of the data maybe very sensitive if opened to public.

  5. REMINDER: the main objective of the program = integrated ecological model useful in developing coastal resources management structures and protocols.

Development of linkages with international programs Clearly visible in other international or regional projects e.g. JSPS-MCUP & NaGISA in relation to data gathering The UNEP/GEF South China Sea Project, which has forged alliance with the GEF Small Grants Program. NaGISA is working on sediment samples from oil spill area in the Philippines. Other programs or projects, which also collect samples from similar environments in other parts of the world, are just waiting for the data set from JSPS for the comparison and analysis. d). Indonesia has been inviting scientific institutions locally and from abroad to join their activities, e.g. cruises.

  7. e) In the integration, it is more pragmatic if scientists first focus activities in knowing what issues or gaps in knowledge we have in our region. We could then address these issues within JSPS projects & in collaboration f) Address common issues e.g. climate change, habitat degradation, climate variability, resources overexploitation g) The IOC/WESTPAC symposium & session in Kota Kinabalu – good exposure of JSPS

  8. 4. Sourcing of funds to enhance program activities All members of the JSPS program are encouraged to actively seek funds in order to continue & sustain project activities. Some bilateral & multilateral agreements among member countries have been developed or are being developed by a few members. The other means to raise the necessary financial support can be gleaned from the above discussion on the agenda items.
