  3. John Cabot • An Italian living in England • Inspired by Columbus • Wanted to find the Northwest Passage • Left England in 1497 • First landed on Newfoundland

  4. John Cabot • Explored the areas on the East Coast of Canada and the US • Couldn’t find the Passage • Claimed most of the East Coast before returning to England

  5. Sir Francis Drake • British ship Captain who traded with the Spanish • Ship sunk in a Spanish port • Survived • Returned to Spanish America to steal Spanish treasure

  6. Sir Francis Drake • The British continued to attack and steal from the Spanish • Started a war between the Spanish and the British

  7. Roanoke • Located off the coast of present-day North Carolina • Sir Walter Raleigh started the colony • Wanted to find gold • Indians shared traps for fishing • John White was the leader under the second group of colonists • White went back to England to get more supplies • When White returned, all the colonists had disappeared. • CROATOAN was carved on a doorpost

Jamestown • First English colony • Swampy area surrounded by water on 3 sides with disease-carrying mosquitos. • 1607 - London Company wanted to establish a money making colony. • Starving Time – The winter of 1609 to 1610 when colonists relied on dogs, rats, and humans for foo. • Not a good relationship with the Indians • Pocahontas was Chief Powhatan’s daughter who helped John Smith save Jamestown. • John Rolfe helped the colony by finding the crop of tobacco, which sold for high prices in England.

  10. Henry Hudson • Englishman who sailed for the Dutch • Attempted to find the Northwest Passage • 1609 found a river full of fish • Claimed it and the area surrounding it for the Netherlands

  11. Dutch West India Company • In 1621 settled in Fort Orange (near present-day Albany) • Good profits in furtrade • Established trading post all along the river • GovernorPeter Minuit

  12. Native American Relations • Offered goods in exchange for the Native American land • Traded guns for furs with the Iroquois • French and Huron were their major trade rivals

  13. New Amsterdam • Peter Stuyvesant, the new governor changed the name • Highly disliked • Governed for 17 years • Captures a Swedish settlement • Successful colony • Religious refuge for Jews

  14. New York • English wanted control of New Netherland • Offered it to the Duke of York • English sent Stuyvesant a letter demanding surrender • No shots fired • New Netherland becomes New York
