Evaluation & Assessment • You may notice on UBlearns that you have been enrolled in a course entitled UBlearns Workshop Assessments. • After you complete this workshop, please login to this course and find the tab marked Grade Center • Within that tab, you will find a quiz about material discussed in this session. Please complete this quiz within 1 week of today. This helps us assess the effectiveness of our workshop and make necessary adjustments.

  7. Add Grade Columns • Click Create Column • Enter column information, including points, primary display, and category • Click OK

  8. Add Grade Columns - Exercise • Add a Grade Column: • Give it a display name of Homework 1 • Add a second Grade Column: • Give it a display name of Homework 2 • Add a third Grade Column: • Give it a display name of Midterm Exam • Add a fourth Grade Column: • Give it a display name of Final Exam

  9. Enter or Modify Grades Manually • Grades can be entered or changed by hand: • Click each grade cell individually • Type a grade in the cell, then press Enter

  10. UBlearns Column Information • To view column details: • Click the column’s drop-down arrows • Select Column Information • Shows: • Point value • Due date • Whether included in calculations • Category • Primary display

  11. Comments • Click on the double-down arrow in a student’s grade field • Select Add Comment • Comments are viewable by students in their My Grades area

  12. Weighted Columns • Can be used to calculate weighted grades based off existing grades • Can create more than one weighted column

  13. Weighted Columns • Add a calculated - weighted column • Add the columns that are forming the weighted grade • Percentages usually equal 100% total

Weighted Columns - Exercise • Modify – Weighted Total column • Select each column to weight • Add Homework 1, Homework 2, Midterm Exam, and Final Exam. • Click the arrow to add each column • Enter the percentage to weight the column • Use 15% for each homework, 30% for Midterm, and 40% for Final

  15. Creating Categories • Creating a category in Grade Center allows for multiple assignments to count for a specific portion of the grade. This is useful for weighting. • Select the create category button to create a specific category. You have the ability to edit these categories, but not the 9 defaulted categories.

Creating Categories - Exercise • In the grade center, select the Manage tab, and then the Categories Option. • Next, select the Create Categories button • Create the categories “Homework” and “Projects” • Back in the full grade center, try creating an assignment and assigning it one of your created categories

  17. Color Coding • Color coding is a useful option for organizing the grade center • Colors can be used for In Progress, Needs Grading, or Exempt grades • You must Enable Color Codes before the colors will display in Grade Center

  18. Color Coding – Exercise • Click the Manage tab, and then the Grading Color Codes option • Select enable Grading Color Codes by checking the box • Assign 3 colors for in progress, needs grading, and exempt grades • Click on a cell and select the “exempt grade” option to view a color selection

Hide/Show Students & Grades • To hide grades from students choose double-down arrow at top of column > Show/hide to Users • A student’s name and grades can also be temporarily hidden from the instructor’s view • Select Manage > Column Organization • Select Show/Hide Users • Select checkbox for each student to show/hide • Click either Show Users or Hide Users at the top of the window • Hidden users are grayed out in the Users Screen

  20. Freeze/Unfreeze Columns • A frozen column is one that does not move as you scroll left to right. First and Last name of the students is defaulted as frozen but you can modify this. • To freeze or unfreeze columns: • Within the Manage tab, select Column Organization • Drag the grey bar below the columns you wish to freeze • Items above the bar are frozen • Frozen items are shaded grey • Any column (from top or bottom) can be frozen. Drag bottom columns up to the top section to freeze them.

Hide/Show Columns • As a note, if a column is hidden in the grade center, it will also be hidden to the instructor. • To hide Columns: • Select the down arrow for the column name • Choose Hide Column • To re-display a hidden column: • Within the Manage tab, select Column Organization • Select the checkbox for the column • Click Show/Hide • Select Show Selected Column

  22. Smart Views • Can be used to examine a subset of student grades • Can restrict view by grades (benchmarks), group, focus • Select the Smart Views Option within the Manage tab to access this content

  23. Emailing Students • From within UBlearns, you can email: • a Smart View subset of students • individual students • an entire class • groups of students • Messages do not show all the recipients in the header • Files can be attached to the messages

Clear Attempts • To clear a quiz attempt: • Locate the student who needs the reset • Click the down arrow next to Attempt in Progress • Select the attempt to clear from the drop-down menu • Click Clear attempt • If a network connection is lost or a computer crashes, previously answered question attempts are lost unless questions are presented one at a time when creating the assessment

  25. Download Grades • Select Download • Download select columns or entire Grade Center • Comma or tab delimited format • Select text tab delimited (.txt) as the file type for editing in Excel • Do not save as a typical spreadsheet, as this is not a compatible form for uploading to UBlearns.

Upload Grades • Select Upload • Upload grades from a downloaded and modified file • Make an appointment at the TLC for one-on-one assistance with setting up uploading of scoring services data for use with your course • Cannot upload a spreadsheet originally generated in Excel – the Grade Center must first be downloaded from UBlearns
