  2. Chapter 4 “Proportional Relationships” Section 4.1 “Rates” Section 4.2 “Identifying and Writing Proportions” Section 4.3 “Solving Proportions” Section 4.4 “Similar Figures and Proportions” Section 4.5 “Using Similar Figures” Section 4.6 “Scale Drawings and Scale Models”

  3. Objective • SWBAT find rates

  4. Section 4.1 “Rates” RATIO- uses division to compare two quantities of the SAME MEASURE. You can write ratios three different ways: a b a to b a:b

  5. What is the ratio of: Blue to total Yellow to green Green to red Red to blue 1/17 6/7 7/3 3/1 Ratios

  6. 14 14 14 + 10 10 a. = = 14 7 7 24 12 5 home matches home matches b. = = = all matches away matches Try It Out… VOLLEYBALL A volleyball team plays 14 home matches and 10 away matches. a.Find the ratio of home matches to away matches. b.Find the ratio of home matches to all matches. SOLUTION

  7. 5 ft Find the ratio of the height to the width. Find the ratio of the width to the height. 9 ft Are the ratios the same? NO!!

  8. “Rates” RATE- a ratio that compares two quantities measured in different units. Examples of rates: speed & distance, wages 45miles hour 5 meters second 8 dollars hour

  9. UNIT RATE- 1 a rate whose denominator is when it is written as a fraction. 45 miles 1 hour 90miles 2 hours ÷ 2 ÷ 2 = = UNIT RATE

  10. 110miles2 55miles 110miles = = 2hours2 1hour 2hours Finding a Unit Rate A car travels 110 miles in 2 hours. Find the unit rate.

  11. 675 beats 5 135 beats 675 beats = = 5 minutes 5 1 minutes 5 minutes Finding a Unit Rate During exercise, Sonia’s heart beats 675 times in 5 minutes. How many times does it beat per minute?

  12. 5.75 miles 23miles 4 23miles = = 4hours 4 1hour 4hours Finding a Unit Rate Arnold and Jena went mountain biking on some trails in their town. Based on the information below, which one of them rode at a faster pace? Arnold rode 23 miles in 4 hours. Jena rode 16 miles in 3.5 hours. Arnold Jena 16 miles 16 miles ÷ 3.5 4.6 miles 3.5 hours 3.5 hours ÷ 3.5 1 hour

  13. 30 + 0.25 m 3.75 0.25 $.25 per minute = = 15 1 Your basic monthly charge for cell phone service is $30, which includes 300 free minutes. You pay a fee for each extra minute you use. One month you paid $3.75 for 15 extra minutes. Find your total bill if you use 22 extra minutes. STEP1Calculate the unit rate. STEP2 Write a verbal model and then an expression. Let mbe the number of extra minutes. STEP3 Evaluate the expression when m=22. 30 + 0.25(22) = 35.5 Total Bill: $35.50

  14. “Rate or Ratio?” RateRatio
