  1. EXAMPLE: Gender (1.3.45) BANQUO You should be women, And yet your beards forbid me to interpret That you are so. Banquo and Macbeth have just met the witches and they are about to give predictions for both of their futures. It tells us a little of how the witches look--they're supposed to be women but they have beards, which helps add to the confusion the witches cause. The confusion over thier gender will help us understand Lady Macbeth's comments later about being "unsexed": women are supposed to be pretty, dainty, and caring, but these women are not, they are evil (and that's what Lady Macbeth will ask to become later.) • Each group chooses one theme. • For each quote, you need to explain: • What is happening at this point in the play • How this quote affects your understanding of the play (what do you learn about the characters/plot through this quote) • How the quote applies to the theme you have chosen • Each person in the group needs to have their own paper with responses to the quotes. • The quotes are labeled act.scene.line, so 1.5.34 is Act I, Scene 5, Line 34.
