  2. Objectives: • Understand concussions & potential consequences • Recognize signs/symptoms & how to respond • Learn about return to activity for concussions • Focus on prevention and preparedness to keep athletes safe

  3. Definition: • Brain injury--functional disturbance • Causes changes in cognitive, emotional, and physical aspects of individuals • Most occur without loss of consciousness • All are serious

  4. Concussion Facts: • Cannot be diagnosed by X-ray, CT scan, or MRI • 3.8 million sports & recreational-related concussions occur each year in the USA • Repeated concussion can result in brain swelling, permanent brain damage, and even death • 4x more likely for reoccurrence • Can occur in any sport

  5. What causes a concussion? • Forceful blow to the head or body that results in rapid movement of the head

  6. How do you know?

What should you do: Action Plan • Remove the athlete from play • Seek evaluation from professional medical health care provider • Inform athlete’s parents/guardians about possible brain injury and give them fact sheet on concussions • Allow the athlete to return to play only with permission from a health care provider • Must complete gradual return-to-play guideline

  8. How are concussions treated? PHYSICAL & MENTAL REST

  9. How long will it take to get better? • Typically 7~10 days • Every concussion is different • No sign or symptom prediction length • Numerous or few

  10. If symptoms are still present during activity- • Individual has increase chance of: • Their symptoms getting worse • Having their symptoms last longer • Developing a more serious brain injury

  11. Serious Brain Injury: • Second Impact Syndrome DEADLY

  12. Return-to-Play-Guideline • Should not start return-to-play-guideline until: • Completely symptom free • Receive written permission from health care professional who is experienced in evaluating for concussions • Directions: • Each step must take place on separate days • If symptoms return-stop all activity immediately • Must have 24 hours of rest • Once symptoms resolve, athlete can start at previous level

  14. Prevention & Preparedness • Insist that safety comes first • Teach athletes safe playing techniques • Make sure athletes are wearing right protective equipment for their activity
