To be their principal advocate in ensuring they receive the benefits to which they are entitled and to promote the health, welfare, and quality of life of all veterans in recognition of their service to this nation.

Florida state statute Florida law requires each Florida county to employ a veterans’ service officer to assist veterans and their dependents in filing for benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The law also states that the Florida Department of Veteran Affairs (FDVA) is responsible for initial certification and training.

  11. Veterans’ Services 2013/14 In FY 13-14, Volusia County’s Veterans’ Services Office: • Clients : 8,710 • Claims and appeals: 8,064 • Retroactive claims processed: $16,312,189.19 • Compensation and pension benefit payments: $186,200,00.00 • Annual VA Housing Benefits: 1.3 billion

  12. Services Provided • Assist in filing: • Compensation benefits • Pension benefits • Vocational rehabilitation • Educational benefits for veterans and dependents • Adaptive housing and automobile Grants • Medical enrollment

  13. Services Provided • Assist in filing for: • Insurance benefits • Burial benefits • Service documents • Private medical records • CHAMPVA and TRICARE enrollment • Appeals

  14. Additional Services • Assist widows with filing for survivor benefits program • Provide income letters • Casualty reporting • Conduct home/nursing home visits • Legislative efforts – CVSOA • Property Tax Exemption

Additional Services Continued • Support in outreach – Yellow Ribbon Programs, local colleges and universities – 75 Veterans Organizations – Nursing Homes & ALF’S – County supported activities like Volusia County Veteran’s Treatment Court, Volusia/Flagler Coalition for the Homeless, and TDLCB.
