  1. Feast of the Presentation of the Lord 2 February

  2. Feast of the Presentation The Feast of the Presentation, often called Candlemas, commemorates the purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the presentation of Christ in the temple, which took place 40 days after his birth as Jewish law required. Luke tells us, quoting Exodus 13:2,12, that Mary and Joseph took Jesus to Jerusalem because every firstborn child was to be dedicated to the Lord.

  3. Festal Icon of The Presentation

  4. About the icon….. St. Joseph is seen on the extreme left as an elderly man with white hair and beard. Mary stands beside him with her arms extended towards her Son, Jesus. She is traditionally shown in blue garments. The doors of the Temple are seen in the background and the infant Christ is held by the elderly St. Simeon, the God – Receiver in front of, and above those doors. Behind St. Simeon stands St. Anna the prophetess, who proclaimed on seeing the Christ Child that he was the long-awaited Messiah.

  5. Presentation at the Temple It was at the Temple that Simeon and the prophetess Anna, filled with the Holy Spirit, confirmed that the infant was the new-born Messiah. Simeon, upon seeing the Messiah, gave thanks to the Lord, singing a hymn now called the Nunc Dimittis

  6. Nunc Dimmitis Lord, now you let your servant go in peace, your word has been fulfilled:My own eyes have seen the salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of every people:a light to reveal you to the nationsand the glory of your people Israel.

  7. Presentation of the Lord Simeon told Mary, "Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is spoken against, (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed." • This feast finishes the story of the Nativity but, with Simeon’s words, we are pointed towards the Easter event.

  8. Candlemas On the feast of The Presentation we bless candles for use all year long. This is to remind us that Christ is the ‘Light that enlightens all mankind’. Christ is the ‘Light of the World’ who helps us overcome evil and helps us understand the ways of the Father. Candles are used in religious ceremonies to remind us that Christ is the Light of the World and we Christians must strive to bring his light to the world.

  9. Prayer: A Light for Every Generation During this Catholic Schools week we pray for all our Catholic schools and all those involved in education - pupils, teachers, administrators and parents; may God’s Spirit shape their minds and hearts so that they may be a source of hope and light in their families and communities. We make this prayer through Christ our Hope and our Light. Amen
