  2. September 4th • Journal Entry: How does Rainsford end up at Zaroff’s house? What are the first two major events of the story? • Essential Question: Why is reading important to my life? • Learning Target: I can read and understand a short story.   3. September 4th – English IV • Journal Entry- Write a journal entry about the following: What is courage? How would most people today define courage? Journal entry must exceed ten sentences!!! • Essential: Are we governed by fate, free will, a greater power, or do we fall somewhere in between? • Learning Target: I can work collaboratively in literature circles to analyze a text. Reminder: Anglo Saxon Test Tomorrow for all English IV classes!!!!

Examples of Alliteration Activity TTT • "You'll never put a better bit of butter on your knife."(advertising slogan for Country Life butter) • "Good men are gruff and grumpy, cranky, crabbed, and cross.“ (Clement Freud) • "The soul selects her own society.”(Emily Dickinson) • "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation."(Henry David Thoreau, Walden) • “I watched the bare brown back of the prisoner marching in front of me."(George Orwell, "A Hanging," 1931) Using the first letters of your name write four lines of alliteration: For example: T H O M A S A N I A Reminder: Anglo Saxon Test Tomorrow for all English IV classes!!!!

Example • T - Timmy Todd tattled all the time and when • H- his humble sister Hattie heard about it she decided it was time to take a stand. • O - She called Dr Oz about performing an obliterating operation on the odd tattler. • M - Many a weird stories had Dr. Oz heard. Even ones about Mary’s many toes; and Mattie misplaced molar; and even once he had heard that Mr. Mave had stuck his member in a mud hole. • A- And yet, this tale of the tattler was an ambitious and astounding affair. • S - So the Dr sauntered slowly down the sidewalk to see what he could do. • A - And minutes later, he found Timmy Todd tattling away about animals who snuck in the garden and about angry ashy men who argued aside the shed. • N – No more than one minute had passed when the Dr realized he needed a needle he needed a knife and he needed it all before the hints of night. • I – imagine, the initial rush and the fuss of the house as they all ran about, itching to find all the Dr’s supplies. • A – an after an astonishing amount of time had passed and the Dr was through, the house was filled with silence as the tattler tattle had been removed.

  6. Literature Circles Beowulf • Handouts provided • Get in groups of four, you will be reading the selected pages as a group. You will answer the following questions. Please be prepared to report back to class. It is essential that everyone reads the text. Reminder: Anglo Saxon Test Tomorrow for all English IV classes!!!!

  8. Grammar Review • Nouns: • Noun: a singular noun names one person, one thing or idea. A plural noun names more than one. A possessive noun shows possession, ownership, or the relationship between two nouns. Test for the first part of Beowulf will be on9/11

I am checking journal entries today, please make sure you have completed at least five journal entries.

What does it mean to be generous? • 3rd Period only: Today we need to discuss alliteration, complete a foldable , watch video clip and begin part 2 of Beowulf. Complete exit slip. • 4th period only: We will watch a clip of Beowulf, finish our foldable, and begin Part 2 of Beowulf. Complete exit slip. • Essential: Are we governed by fate, free will, a greater power, or do we fall somewhere in between? • Learning Target: I can work collaboratively in literature circles to analyze a text. • Due Dates: • 3rd period only – alliteration assignment is due Monday 9/10 • Test on Beowulf is next Tuesday 9/11!! Please study. • Notebook Quiz on Monday 9/ 10!! Please make sure your notebook is organized. • To Do: 4th period only, tape your foldable from class yesterday on day 9/6. (left side) Tape your alliteration assignment on day 9/4. (left side) and record grades on back cover. I will be returning those back to you today. Turn in your essay at the beginning of class … if you do not have it today, put your name on a sheet of paper and turn it in. This completes your 8th starter, please number them or highlight the first sentence. I will check journal entries today.
