  2. Culture • Combination of beliefs, values, customs and social behaviors • Family and the society in which a person lives are integral • How does a person’s heritage or culture of origin influence their beliefs and values? • What do these things mean to our identity?

Culture • What is the importance of cultural community in the formation of identity? • How does a group’s cultural identity influence its beliefs and values? • Consider immigrant to Canada: • How does the Canadian immigrant experience affect an individual’s beliefs and values? • Why are their beliefs and values different than others living with Canada?

  4. Language • A common language and culture unite people. • Why is language important? • What is the cost of losing language in a culture or society? • What are the affects of assimilation on language? (think immigration)

  5. Voices Consider this written piece in the context of language and collective experience.

  6. Religion and Spirituality • How is religion defined? • A set of beliefs that centre on worship and faith in a god or Gods. • Tries to explain our existence by examining our place in the universe. • Historically it has played a major role in what we believe and how we live.

Religion and Spirituality • Many consider themselves to be spiritual without following a certain defined religion. • Religion is seen a major factor in how we see the rest of the world and is seen as central to identity. In your opinion, how is religion and our choice of belief an integral part of identity?

  8. Environment and Relationship to the Land • This can be cultural, social, spiritual and economic. • It involves a responsibility to the environment. • But how does this affect identity?

  9. Gender • A gender role is a set of expected behaviors or personal qualities that a given social group considers acceptable for one of the biological sexes, male or female. These specific roles vary from culture to culture. • How have gender roles changed over the years for men and women? • How does this affect identity?

  10. Media • Discussion: • Given all that has been discussed how does media influence identity?

  11. Collective vs. Individualist • How would you categorize each of the influences that have been discussed? • (Individual or Collective Experiences/ influences) • Culture & language • Religion & spirituality • Environment and relationship to the land • Gender • media

  12. What you should know ….. • Relationship between ideology and identity? • What is this relationship? • What is the difference between collectivism and individualism? • What are the factors that influence these experiences?
