  1. Do Tonight! • 1.) Take Study Island Quiz: Physical and Chemical Properties • 2.) Write down as many homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures as you can find.

  2. Properties of Matter Notes 2-4

  3. Things you see and do not see in this room are made of matter

  4. Matter:anything that has mass and takes up space

  5. 3 types of matter : elements, compounds, and mixture

  6. Pure Substances Compound • Two or more elements that are chemically combined. Example: NaCl (Salt), H2O (Water) • Element • This simplest form of a pure substance. • Example: Na (Sodium), Ne (Neon)

  7. Compound or Element?

  8. Compound or Element? • C12 H22 O11

  9. Compound or Element? • NaCl – Table Salt

  10. Compounds cannot be changed by a physical change

  11. What is a mixture? A mixture is when 2 or more elements are joined physically

  12. No new substance is formed in a mixture

  13. Watch This! • Fill in the blanks on your graphic organizer. • Watch to 5:46 • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kezsLzyR-Pc

  14. Homework Tonight • Go home and find as many examples as possible of homogeneous mixtures and heterogeneous mixtures. • Write a list and bring to class to share tomorrow!

  15. Ways to measure matter: • 1.) Mass • 2.) Volume

  16. 1.) Mass is the amount of matter in an object

  17. Mass and weight are not the same types of measurements

  18. What do you weigh on the moon? • You weigh 1/6 of what you weigh on earth. But your mass is the same. Why?

  19. A kilogram is a unit of mass

  20. Mass is determined by a balance

  21. 2.) Volume is the amount of space an object or substance takes up

  22. There are 4 phases of matter: solid, liquid, gas, and plasma

  23. Act it out! • Watch your classmates become a Solid, Liquid, or Gas.

  24. A solid’s size and shape is always definite

  25. A Liquid’s shape is changed by its container

  26. Water can occur in any of the three phases (solid, liquid, and gas/steam)

  27. The volume of a solid or a liquid isn’t necessarily determined by the shape of the container

  28. Gas does not have a definite shape

  29. Unlike a solid and liquid, the volume of a gas is determined by its container

  30. Gas expands and contracts depending on the size and shape of its container

  31. Brain Pop! • Read through the practice quiz. • We will do this quiz at the end of the video. http://www.brainpop.com/

  32. pH Scale • Draw this on the back of your Brain Pop:

  33. Acids: • substance that dissociates in water to yield a sour corrosive solution containing hydrogen ions, having a pH of less than 7, and turning litmus red.

  34. Bases: Bases are alkaline: having a pH greater than 7. • They are characterized by a bitter taste, a slippery feel, the ability to turn litmus blue, and the ability to react with acids to form salts.

  35. Closure: • At the bottom of the page summarize what you have learned about the properties of matter today.
