State Standards • GLE 0501.8.2 Experience various literary genres, including fiction and nonfiction, poetry, drama, chapter books, biography/autobiography, short stories, folk tales, myths, science fiction. • GLE 0501.8.3 Understand the basic characteristics of the genres (e.g., narratives, prose, poetry, drama) studied. • SPI 0501.8.3 Distinguish among various literary genres (e.g., poetry, drama, letters, ads, historical fiction, biographies, autobiographies).

  3. What is genre? • Genre-n 1. a. kind, category, or sort, esp of literary or artistic work • Genre is different categories or types of books.

  4. Different Types of Genre FICTION NON-FICTION fantasy realistic fiction mystery historical fiction science fiction traditional literature folktales legends fables fairy tales myths informational biography autobiography

  5. Fiction • Has events that are imaginary and invented by the author. There are different kinds of fiction: • fantasy • realistic fiction • mystery • historical fiction • science fiction • poetry

  6. Fiction - Fantasy • A story with elements such as unreal settings, monsters, and characters with superhuman powers.

  7. Fiction – Realistic Fiction • A story with characters, events, and settings that could be real.

  8. Fiction - Mystery • A suspenseful story about a puzzling event that is not solved until the end of the story. • A work of Fiction dealing with a solution to a crime.

  9. Fiction – Historical Fiction • A fictional story that takes place in a particular time period in the past. • Often the setting is real, but the characters are made up even though they seem real.

  10. Fiction – Science Fiction • A type of fantasy that uses scientific principles and technology • Such as robots and time machines

  11. Poetry • Verse written to create response of thought and feeling from the reader • Often uses rhyme, rhythm, and repition to help convey its meaning.

  12. Traditional Literature Stories that are passed down from one group to another in history. Folktales legends Fables Fairy tales Myths.

  14. Traditional Literature - Fables • A story in which animals speak and act like people; usually meant to teach a lesson (Aesop’s Fables).

  16. Traditional Literature - Myths • A legend that tells us about a being with human powers that cannot be explained • Myths attempt to explain what is unknown

  17. Nonfiction • Represents a subject which an author presents as fact or real. Includes the following: Informational Biography Autobiography

  18. Nonfiction - Informational • Texts that provide facts about a variety of topics • Authors purpose is to inform

  19. Nonfiction - Biography • The story of a real person’s life written by another person.

  20. Nonfiction - Autobiography • The story of a real person’s life written by that person.
