Science Vertical Team #4 High Need SE Strategy and Activity

This educational activity aims to enhance students' mastery of experimental science through a collaborative three-way match exercise. Students will work in groups to identify and match the well-defined questions, testable hypotheses, and appropriate tools and equipment from various experiments. By discussing and pairing these components, students will develop a better understanding of the scientific method. The activity encourages critical thinking and builds essential skills in designing and implementing experimental investigations.

  2. Expectation • SE: 6.2B Design and implement experimental investigations by making observations, asking well-defined questions, formulating testable hypotheses, and using appropriate equipment and technology • “Process Skill” • 1st DCA Mastery: 43%

  3. The Activity • To increase mastery of this expectation, teachers will implement a three-way-match activity • Students will work in groups to match three components of an experiment • Well-defined question • Testable hypothesis • Appropriate equipment and technology

  4. The Activity, Cont. • Print and cut apart the matching components of each experiment • You may add pictures for each component to scaffold • You may choose not to color code/label each piece for increased rigor • Mix them up! • Distribute to students; students discuss each component and search for two matching pieces among their classmates • See the two examples that follow

  5. Question Does the mass of an object affect its speed down a ramp? Hypothesis If you increase the mass, the speed of the car will increase. Tools and Equipment Stopwatch Ramp Triple-beam balance

  6. Question Does the temperature of a solution affect how much sugar dissolves in water? Hypothesis The higher the temperature, the more sugar will dissolve in the solution. Tools and equipment Beaker Water Sugar Hot Plate Thermometer
