  1. Meeting between Yinghuo-1 and the PPI and NAIF Nodes Raymond J. Walker Steven P. Joy Presented to the PDS Management Council St. Louis, Mo. August 16, 2010

Meeting Highlights • Representatives of the PPI Node and NAIF Node meet with scientists and information technologists from the Yinghuo-1 mission. • Ray Walker and Steve Joy described in general how PDS works and in particular how the PPI Node works. • Chuck Acton described NAIF and Boris Semenov described using SPICE. • Members of the YH-1 team described the mission and data activities. • YH-1 has three instruments – plasma, magnetic field and imaging (plus radio science). • It will be launched along with the Russian Phobos-Grunt mission – now delayed. • They stressed their interest in making the data from YH-1 freely available. • They stressed their desire to work with PDS in making the data publicly available. • The YH-1 team are actively working on generating PDS 3 documentation now!

  3. Meeting Summary Between the Yinghuo-l Mars Mission and the NASA Planetary Data System • Plans for NASA PDS and CNSA cooperation based on the April 12 meeting at which it was agreed that "in terms of scientific exchange, both sides will organize related experts to talk about special topics on scientific cooperation in July". • Yinghuo-1 Mars Mission team and Shandong University invited PDS experts from the PPI Node, the Geosciences Node, and SPICE experts from the NAIF Node, to come to China and attend "the 2nd Yinghuo-1 Mars Mission Science Data & PDS Workshop" on July 10-12, 2010. • The sides will develop a general strategy for Chinese planetary science missions to produce PDS compatible data, and agree on specific cooperation on data archiving between the upcoming Yinghuo-1 Mars Mission and the PDS. • Special Project 1 A China-PDS Working Group will be established, focused on data archiving for the Yinghuo-1 Mars Mission with PDS participants such as the PDS-PPI Node, the PDS-Geosciences Node and the PDS-NAIF Node. • Special Project 2 The Yinghuo-1 staff will be invited to a short session at the PDS to get a demonstration on how PDS works. • Special Project 3 An Archive Plan will be developed for Yinghuo-1 based on PDS as well as IPDA discussions. The details are to be discussed.

Summary Continued • Special Project 4 • The PDS-PPI Node will set up a portal to access Chinese Yinghuo-l data, and the Yinghuo-l Online Science Data Archive will set up a portal to access the PPI data archive. • 3. The sides discussed probable cooperation for the future. • Special Project 5 • A longer term visit may be arranged for staff of Yinghuo-l and other interested Chinese planetary science missions to observe and interact with PDS. • 4. With regard to further interfaces between the NAIF Node and the Chinese side regarding SPICE standards, processes and tools, the sides agreed to promote the usage of SPICE in Chinese planetary science missions. The sides will discuss the possibilities for further special projects and then exchange these proposals at the directorate level, where a consensus path forward should be worked out.

  5. Recent Developments • Dr. Wang Chi will send a letter to Ed Grayzeck (source Dr. Alian Wang) • The YH-1 mission will publish the mission data. • The YH-1 mission will be open for international scientific participation. • They agree to hold the next meeting in the US (UCLA?) but will need help with US visas. • The YH-1 mission has decided to use SPICE.

  6. Concerns • The YH-1 team have about 17 months to before they get data. They have a lot to do between now and then. • They are actively working on documentation now. Now is the time to work with them to have the best possible archive. • We need to clarify what we can do at the meeting at UCLA to try to assure a scientifically useful archive and not violate export control. • PPI has a number of tools that we believe are in the public domain that will make the archiving task much easier. They can be used most effectively if we can assist the YH-1 team. • From Chuck’s and Boris’ comments I also believe there is urgency in starting SPICE lessons.
