  1. Princeton UniversityPlasma Physics LaboratoryEVMS Certification Review Laboratory Overview M. Williams October 4, 2011

  2. PPPL is a single-purpose DOE –SC National Laboratory: Mission The DOE Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory works with collaborators across the globe to develop fusion as an energy source for the world, and conducts research along the broad frontier of plasma science and technology. PPPL also nurtures the national research enterprise in these fields, and educates the next generation of plasma and fusion scientists. Vision Enabling a world powered by safe, clean and plentiful fusion energy while leading discoveries in plasma science and technology.

  3. 88 acres, FY11 budget = $80M, 480 employees Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory Funded by U.S. Department of Energy Office of Fusion Energy Science Operated by Princeton University

  4. Some form of EVMS has been in place at PPPL for quite a while: • Adopted in early 1980’s with TFTR construction • Introduced job cost reports • Introduced WAF’s (Work Authorization Forms a.k.a. Control Account Plans) • Introduced Cost Performance Reporting • Introduced Variance analysis reporting • 1982 - 1997 TFTR Operations/D-T Upgrade • 1997 – 1999 NSTX Design and Construction (on cost/on schedule) • 1999 – 2000 NSTX First Neutral Beam (on cost/on schedule) • 2000 – 2002 TFTR D&D (under cost/on schedule) • 2003 – 2009 NCSX Compact Stellarator (cancelled) • 2009 – Present NSTX Upgrade (presently on schedule/under cost) PPPLEVMS Job CA (Control Account) WAF WAD (Work Authorization Document, Control Account Plan) Job manager CAM Cog CAM Planning & Control Project Controls

  5. Ownership of the Earned Value Management System is well-defined: Own PM Assign CAMs Assess status Resolve issues

  6. Completing the NSTX Upgrade Project on cost/on schedule is a high priority for PPPL: • NSTX is PPPL’s flagship experimental program • Represents approximately half of the Laboratory’s funding • Research is conducted by a collaborative research team of physicists and engineers from 30 U.S. laboratories and universities and 28 international institutions from 11 countries • NSTX recently experienced a run-ending hardware failure • Cause identified and independently reviewed • OFES approval to proceed with project • Project plans have been accelerated
