  2. Clandestine -kept secret because illegal, illicit, or immoral. The group stayed clandestine for many years due to their practices.

  3. Covert -not openly acknowledged or displayed -The detective was covert in his mission to find the truth.

  4. Furtive -attempting to avoid notice or attention. Typically to avoid guilt, due to belief that discovery will lead to guilt -The furtive criminal ran from the police after robbing a local bank.

  5. Inconspicuous -Not clearly visable things -The wart on the mans finger was inconspicuous due to the location.

  6. Sly -Having or showing a deceitful nature; sneaky, clever. -The man was sly when he slid past the guards and into his car without being noticed

  7. Stealthy -Behaving in a cautious manner so as not to be seen or heard. The ninja was stealthy when he leaped upon the roof.

  8. Surreptitious -Kept secret because it would not be approved. -The surreptitious romance was hidden away from the world.

  9. Unobtrusive -Not attracting attention people -The loner was very unobtrusive sitting in the corner reading his book.

  10. Adversary -Ones opponent in a contest. -Jacob Black and Edward Cullen are adversary's for Bella’s love.

  11. Advocate -A person who publicly support or recommends a course or policy -Celebrities are often an advocate for a particular cause.

  12. Artisan -A worker in a skilled trade - I watched as the artisan weaved the blanket made of wool

  13. Ascetic -Practicing self-discipline from all forms of indulgence. -Nuns are ascetic.

  14. Charlatan A person who is falsely claiming to have special knowledge. A charlatan can con you into believing what you know is false.

  15. Hedonist -Someone in the pursuit of self pleasure. -A hedonist is often in search of what will make him or her happy.

  16. Orator -A public speaker -The orator tells his opinion for the whole world to hear.

  17. Pariah -Outcast -Many people with leprosy were considered to be pariah’s.

  18. Raconteur -A person who tells stories in a skillful and amusing way. -The raconteur told the story in a way that I could remember it perfectly.

  19. Skeptic -A person inclined to question. -I was skeptical about the situation.

  20. Virtuoso A person highly skilled in music or another pursuit The virtuoso made my smile while playing his music.

  21. Extraneous -Irrelevant or unrelated to the subject -The criminal was giving extraneous information to avoid getting in trouble.

  22. Frivolous -Not having any serious purpose or value -Buying a purse yourself is a frivolous expense.

  23. Incidental -Accompanying but not a major part of -Danger is an incidental part of a firefighters job.

  24. Inconsequential -Not important or significant -His work seems trivial and inconsequential.

  25. Irrelevant -Not connected with something -The information was irrelevant to the case

  26. Negligible -So small/unimportant as in not worth considering. Things -The mole on the boys face was negligible.

  27. Peripheral -Of/related to or situated on the edge -Vision

  28. Petty -Of little importance people -The crime committed was petty.

  29. Superficial -Of or occurring on the surface -The wound was purely superficial and needed no stitches.

  30. Trifling -unimportant or trivial

  31. Trivial -Of little value or importance.

  32. Acute -Present or experienced to an intense degree -The pain in her leg was so acute she was screaming in pain.

  33. Astute -Having or showing an ability to assess situations -The astute officer was calm during the situation.

  34. Discerning -Having or showing good judgment -The discerning judge gave a sentence that was well deserved.

  35. Erudite -Having or showing great knowledge -The teacher was erudite.

  36. Incisive -Intelligently analytical -An incisive detective looks at every detail.

  37. Ingenious -Clever, original, and inventive -The plan to steal the money was ingenious.

  38. Judicious -Having or showing or done with good judgment -The choices that were made were judicious and very reasonable.

  39. Perspicacious -Having a ready insight into the understanding of things -The psychic was perspicacious.

  40. Prudent -Acting with or showing care or thought for the future -The young girl was very prudent when planning for the future.

  41. Sagacious -Having or showing mental discernment and good judgment. -The lawyer was sagacious.

  42. Savvy -Shrewdness and practical knowledge; in politics and business -The woman was savvy in the business world.

  43. Acrid -Extremely sharp/bitter -The spoiled milk was acrid in taste.

  44. Arid -Extremely dry -There was not a drop of water in the arid desert.

  45. Aesthetic -Concerned with beauty -The aesthetic landscapers worked hard on the lawn.

  46. Ascetic -Characterized by or suggesting self-discipline religious reasons -The ascetic monk took his vows without hesitation.

  47. Atheistic -The theory or belief god does not exist. -The young girl was atheistic.

  48. Ambiguous -Having a double meaning -Many words have a double meaning.

  49. Ambivalent -Having mixed feelings -The young bride was beginning to be ambivalent about her wedding.

  50. Coalesce -Come together to form a whole -opposite of break up
