  2. Governing Body • The leader/commissioner of the NFL is Roger Goodell. • Roger Goodell was elected commissioner by all 32 owners of teams in the NFL. • The election is between whomever expresses interest in the job.

  3. Specific Jobs • He headed NFL Ventures, which oversees the league's business units, including media properties, marketing and sales, stadium development and strategic planning. • Goodell was heavily involved in the negotiation of the league's current collective bargaining agreement. • He has played an extensive role in league expansion, realignment, and stadium development, including the launch of the NFL Network and securing new television agreements as well as the latest collective bargaining agreement with the National Football League Players Association.

  4. Players Union • The National Football League Players Association is the union for professional football players in the National Football League. Established in 1956, the NFLPA has a long history of assuring proper recognition and representation of players’ interests. • The NFLPA has shown that it will do whatever is necessary to assure that the rights of players are protected • The leader of the NFLPA is DeMaurice F. Smith • DeMaurice had been chosen as leader because he was elected unanimously by a board of active player representatives on March 15, 2009.

  5. Players Union Functions • The NFLPA was established to provide players with formal representation to negotiate compensation and the terms of a collective bargaining agreement.

  6. NFLPA and NFL News • Michael Sam will be the first openly gay person to be accepted into the NFL says the Union Chief. He will be welcomed by teammates and could even lead to his team developing a greater unity. He is expected to be drafted in May, which will make him the first gay player active in the league to be open about his sexuality.
