Born in Amherst, Massachusetts, in 1830 • Went to a female seminary school, but left after a year becauseshe was homesick • She rarely left home or had visitors • Her homesickness is what many people think led to her heartfelt poetry • Both Emily and her sister lived in almost complete isolation all of their lives.

  5. Emily often sent poems to her friends, but she was never published during her lifetime. • She befriended many famous poets, including Ralph Waldo Emerson. • In 1864 she saw a doctor who told her she could no longer read or write—she never left Amherst again

  7. Emily Dickinson died on May 15, 1886 • She was buried in the West Cemetery of Amherst, Hampshire County, Massachusetts. She had her funeral at her home! • When she died, her family found 40 hand bound volumes (books she had made herself) containing almost 1800 poems!

  9. Wrote poems that are romantic and yet lonely, much like her life • Some poems are unfinished; a few even seem to be rough drafts. • More than one version exists of a number of poems. Because she did not publish these poems, she did not have to make a final decision about which word, line, or stanza she preferred.
