  1. Lab Safety for Staff and Students

Expectations for the Science Lab • Stay at your work station • Maintain a clean work area • Read and follow all directions • Report any spills, accidents, or injury to the teacher immediately • Clean and put away all equipment at the end of the lab period • Dispose of waste products according to instruction

  3. Personal Protective Equipment Personal protective equipment (PPE) must be of the accepted type for the activity and must be worn correctly at all times-by students and instructors.

  4. Personal Protective Equipment • Attire in the Lab: • Tie long hair back • Avoid open toed shoes • Avoid dangly jewelry or clothing • Do not engage in • Practical jokes • Horse play • Rough house

  5. No Food or Drink Students must not bring food, drink, or personal items into the work area. After completing the day’s activity and cleaning up, they should wash their hands thoroughly to prevent contamination of themselves and their personal effects.

  6. Chemical and Equipment Safety All chemicals and other hazardous materials must be kept in a properly secured area, clearly and properly labeled, and accounted for meticulously at all times. Students must never be allowed to remove hazardous materials from the lab.

  7. Read the Chemical Safety Information A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) should be available for every chemical you use in lab. Read these and follow the recommendations for safe use and disposal of the material. • http://www.flinnsci.com/search_MSDS.asp

  8. General Safety Laboratory working conditions must be safe. Safety equipment must be sufficient to deal with the most extreme hazard or mishap that could potentially occur.

  9. Emergency • Know the locations of: • fire extinguisher • fire blanket • body shower • eyewash station • first aid kit

  10. Fire Extinguisher • Locate the "KEY" (the round object) • Twist the "KEY" to break the stiff Nylon retaining cord • Then pull "KEY" out • Do not merely attempt to pull the key straight out, unless you are very strong • Raise the nozzle in order to direct the stream of carbon dioxide • The CO2 will cool the fire, and restrict oxygen • The fire, lacking oxygen, should go out. • Squeeze the handle to begin operation.

  11. Fire Blanket • Yank the blanket out of the wall holder. • Wrap it around the victim to smother the fire

  12. Shower The safety shower should be used in EMERGENCIES only to: • Extinguish flames • Remove dangerous chemicalsspilledon yourself, and need to get it off rapidly.

  13. Eye Wash Station • If you get something from the lab in your eye— • GET IT OUT IMMEDIATELY! • Don't wait until lunch or the last period! • Run some water through the eyewash fountain before you use it. • Retract your eyelid (hold it open); • Don’t squint your eyes this restricts water access. • Run fresh water over your eye for several minutes. • Wash your eyes INTERMITTENTLY • Rest in between rinses.

  14. First Aid Kit • Use a first aid kit for small injuries. • Go to the school nurse immediately afterward. • Do not wait until the end of the day. However, if blood is in evidence-- STAY AWAY! Let the victim apply his/her own bandage. • If blood is on the floor or lab bench, your teacher will request trained personnel to do the clean-up

  15. Supervision Students must not perform any unauthorized experiments. During inquiry-based activities, the teacher must approve student-designed experiments-before they are performed.

  16. Emergency Contacts Emergency telephone numbers, including those for the school office, the poison control center, and a hazardous materials service, should be posted in the laboratory. Include emergency response and evacuation procedures on this posting. What’s Wrong With These Statements? • Hal says that his teacher is solely responsible for preventing laboratory accidents. • Keshia started the lab activity before reading it through completely. • Lynn decided to do a lab activity that he read about in a library book before the teacher came into the classroom. • Kim says that the safety goggles mess up her hair and give her raccoon eyes. She refuses to wear them. • Anne and Ron accidentally break a beaker full of some chemical. Instead of risking getting in trouble they quickly clean up the mess with paper towel and throw it in the garbage.
