Objectives Fusion at IAEA To strengthen cooperation and increased awareness amongst institutions and researchers of worldwide fusion energy endeavors Sub-Programme 1.4.4: Nuclear Fusion Research (Physics Section) Objective: To strengthen international cooperation and coordinate scientific and technology development activities on fusion among institutions and/or researchers, and enhance developing Member States involvement with leading fusion laboratories/initiatives Project 1.4.1.4: Atomic and Molecular Data for Fusion ExperimentsObjective: To increase capabilities of Member States to undertake fusion plasma modelling and quantify plasma-materials interactions through improved atomic and molecular databases Project 1.4.1.6: Nuclear data for emerging issues and advanced nuclear facilities (Includes a project on the "Fusion-Evaluated Nuclear Data Library version 3 (FENDL-3)")

Development of Databases • Data for Surface Composition Dynamics Relevant to Erosion Processes (2007-2011) • Characterization of Size, Composition and Origins of Dust in Fusion Devices (2008-2012) • Light Element Atom, Molecule and Radical Behaviour in the Divertor and Edge Plasma Regions (2009-2013) • Spectroscopic and Collisional Data for W from 1 eV to 20 keV (2010-2014) • Nuclear Data Libraries for Advanced Systems: Fusion Devices (FENDL-3) (2008-2011) • Atomic and Molecular Data for State-Resolved Modelling of Hydrogen and Helium and Their Isotopes in Fusion Plasma (2011-2015)

Nuclear Data Section - Fusion Activities • Maintain the IAEA International Reactor Dosimetry File (to characterize neutron spectrum and flux for IFMIF and other facilities 0-40 MeV) • Fusion Evaluated Nuclear Data Library version 3 (FENDL-3). Extends FENDL-2.1 toward higher energies, with inclusion of incident charged particles and covariance data • Maintain and develop bibliographical (AMBDAS) and numerical (ALADDIN) databases for atomic and molecular properties • NDS - Fusion Activities: Key US Partners: NIST (spectroscopy and nuclear standards), Oak Ridge CFADC (Controlled Fusion Atomic Data Center), Brookhaven (Nuclear Data Center)

  10. IAEA provides the forum, it owns and runs the journal. Gives assurance of impartiality and excellence of peer review Reports on status to IFRC Editorial Board drive direction.   11. Fusion Activities in cooperation with other groups within the IAEA Materials research in Physics Section: Fusion expert + 2 Material experts (R. Kamendje, A. Zeman, D. Ridikas) Physics Section and Nuclear Spectrometry and Applications Laboratory: Common course on Plasma Physics and Spectrometry Use of reactor knowledge in IAEA: Cooperation with nuclear fuel cycle and materials technologies (NEFW, V. Inozemtsev) and reactor development (INPRO, NENP) Use of safety knowledge in IAEA: Cooperation with Nuclear Safety group (NSNI)

Short to medium term goal • Strong emphasis on substantive achievements and practical applications of plasma physics and fusion with the goal to support the next steps in fusion research in developed and developing countries. • Magnetic Fusion (networks, applications, training, materials development, safety and security) • Inertial Fusion (basic support, coordinated research projects) • Plasma Physics (schools, coordinated research projects)
