  5. ER Verbs…One small step for man…one giant leap for French students! ER Verbs

  6. Verb Groups • There are 3 groups of regular verbs in French, ones that end in –er, -ir, and –re. • -er verbs are the biggest group! Examples include: écouter- to listen to,étudier- to study, envoyer- to send, regarder- to watch, to look at, dessiner- to draw, chanter- to sing, aimer- to like, to love, manger- to eat, travailler- to work, préférer- to prefer, voyager- to travel, habiter- to live (in a place), jouer- to play, parler- to talk, to speak, détester- to hate, trouver-to find, chercher- to look for, penser-to think, danser- to dance

  7. Conjugating regular er verbs • First, take the infinitive, drop the –er from the end to get the stem. Ex. Aimer → aimer → aim (stem) Make sure your pronoun chart is set up correctly Then, add the following endings to each subject: e, es, e, ons, ez, ent Ex. Aimer J’aime nous aimons Tuaimesvousaimez Il, elle, on aimeils, ellesaiment

  8. Once again, those endings are: -E -Ons -Es -Ez -E -Ent

  9. Pronunciation- All the verbs in the box ( or “shoe”) sound the same! Ex. Aimer J’aime nous aimons Tuaimesvousaimez Il, elle, on aimeils, ellesaiment Also, each statement can be translated into 3 forms in English (simple, progressive, emphatic) So… j’aime= I like, I’m liking, I do like Nous aimons= We like, We’re liking, We do like Negation: To make a verb negative, to say you don’t do something, put “ne…pas” around the verb Ex. Je n’aimepas Nous neregardonspas Il ne parle pas
