  2. The nightmare of Katrina • Tens of thousands without homes • No schools • No medical care • No sanitation • No drinkable water • No security – people vulnerable to violence

  3. This is how one-sixth of the world’s population lives every day.

  4. 307,000The Silent Storm • Every 8 months: 307,000 women die in childbirth • Every 3-1/2 months: 307,000 people die of malaria • Every 35 days: 307,000 people die of HIV/AIDS • Every 10 days: 307,000 children under five die • Right now: 307,000 child soldiers around the world, many under the age of 10

Resolution D022 reads, in part: Resolved, That the General Convention establish the work toward the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals as a mission priority for the coming triennium, and that each diocese, congregation and parishioner be urged to commit to 0.7% giving toward these goals by July 7, 2007 (07/07/07)...

  8. The Millennium Development Goals • Eight goals representing the biggest challenges facing humanity • Pledged by 191 nations • Each has tangible, measurable markers • Achievable IF WE ACT NOW!

  9. Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger Matthew 25:35 ...for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me...

  10. Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education Proverbs 4:5 Get wisdom; get insight: do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth.

  11. Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women Galatians 3:28 There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.

  12. Goal 4: Reduce child mortality Matthew 10:8 Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment.

  13. Goal 5: Improve maternal health Genesis 18:14 Is anything too wonderful for the Lord? At the set time I will return to you, in due season, and Sarah shall have a son.

  14. Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases Matthew 25:36 I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.

  15. Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability Genesis 2:15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it.

  16. Goal 8: Develop a global partnership for development Psalm 82:3-4 Give justice to the weak and the orphan; maintain the right of the lowly and the destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.

  17. They work together.Here’s an example: #7 Accessible water --> #2 More girls able to attend school --> #3 Empowerment of women --> #5 Better maternal health --> #4 Lower infant mortality

What can ONE Congregation do? • Include the MDGs in your weekly prayers. • Invite a speaker from the Task Force. • Do a Lenten class, book study or film series. • Pick a project – follow your passion. • Organize your community. • Go on a mission trip. • Listen to the voices around you. • Give 0.7% of your congregation’s budget.
