  2. 1. Capitalize the pronoun I.

  3. Capitalize the first letter of the first word of each sentence.

  4. 3. Capitalize the first letter of names of people, organizations, and places. Ex. Juan went on a trip to Tokyo, Japan for his company, General Motors.

  5. Capitalize the first letter of adjectives that are made from the names of people and places. Ex. I like Mexican food.

  6. Capitalize the first letter of directions only when they are used to designate actual places, not when they point in a direction. Ex. When we visited the Southwest, we actually had to drive north.

  7. 6. Capitalize the first letter of the names of months and the days of the week.

  8. Capitalize the official title of a person (including abbreviations), but only when you use it with the person’s name. Ex. Did Mary recommend Dr. Montoya to you? Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a pastor before becoming a famous Civil Rights leader.

  9. Capitalize words used as names or parts of names. Ex. Did Uncle George call my mom to tell her our grandmother is with Dad?

  10. Capitalize the first letter of important words in a title of a book, magazine, story, essay, etc. Ex. I enjoyed Mark’s essay, “The Truth About Being a Good Student.”

  11. Capitalize historical events and documents. Ex. The Declaration of Independence was signed prior to the beginning of the Revolutionary War.

  12. Capitalize the names of languages, races, nationalities, and religions. Ex. I learned in Spanish class that many Hispanic countries are primarily Catholic.

  13. Capitalize acronyms and initialisms. Ex. The NBA is the National Basketball Association. PETA is People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

  14. Capitalize a school course when it is followed by a number or it refers to a language. Ex. I have to take French, History 101 and Algebra I this semester. I have social studies and music this morning.

  15. In the salutation of a letter, capitalize the first word, any title, and the name of the person or group. Ex. Dear Uncle Steve, My dear Susan,

  16. In the closing of a letter, capitalize the first word. Ex. Your friend, Yours truly, Love,

  17. Seasons are not capitalized unless they are part of a title. Ex. If it’s summer now, fall cannot be far behind. Please come to our Fall Fun Fair.
