Barrier Methods • Work by preventing the sperm and the egg from meeting so fertilization cannot take place.
Male Condom • Made of latex and fit over the erect penis before intercourse. • Can be purchased at any drug store and are given out free at most family planning clinics.
Female Condom • Made of latex or polyurethane. • When inserted into the vagina, the female condom lines the vaginal walls and covers the cervix.
Diaphragm • Rubber dome that is inserted into the vagina and covers the cervix. • Spermicide must be used with the diaphragm each time you have sex.
Hormonal Methods • Work by preventing ovulation, the release of the egg, or by preventing a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus. • You can only get hormonal methods from a health care provider.
Oral Contraceptives • Commonly called the pill • Prevent ovulation but must be taken every day around the same time to work properly.
Depo-Provera • A shot for women that must be given every 12 weeks to work properly in order to prevent ovulation.
IUD • The intrauterine device, or IUD as it is called, is inserted into the uterus and can both prevent ovulation or implantation. • Women have a choice between two IUDs, which can work for 5 or 10 years.
