  1. Easter Fact or Fiction?

  2. Why the resurrection matters Did Jesus rise from the dead? N Y It’s all a lie It’s all true 1 Corinthians 15 If Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless… we are of all men most to be pitied… let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die. God exists! The Bible is true! We have life, joy, hope, purpose!

  3. Why the resurrection matters Did Jesus rise from the dead? N Y It’s all a lie It’s all true John Updike “Make no mistake: if He rose at all it was as His body; if the cells’ dissolution did not reverse, the molecules reknit, the amino acids rekindle, the Church will fall….” God exists! The Bible is true! We have life, joy, hope, purpose!

  4. How do we know that Jesus rose? • Jesus wasn’t the only “messiah” • Matthew 16:21–22 • Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.”

  5. How do we know that Jesus rose? • Jesus wasn’t the only “messiah” • Women were the first witnesses • The Apostles looked foolish

  6. Matthew 16:23 But [Jesus] turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

  7. Matthew 26:69–75 Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. And a servant girl came up to him and said, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.” But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you mean.” And when he went out to the entrance, another servant girl saw him, and she said to the bystanders, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.” And again he denied it with an oath: “I do not know the man.”…

  8. Matthew 26:69–75 …After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Certainly you too are one of them, for your accent betrays you.” Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know the man.” And immediately the rooster crowed. And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.

  9. How do we know that Jesus rose? • Jesus wasn’t the only “messiah” • Women were the first witnesses • The Apostles looked foolish • Their enemies never brought out the body • The Apostles chose to die for their claim

  10. How do we know that Jesus rose? • Acts 5 – Peter & John flogged • Acts 12 – James beheaded • Acts 14 – Paul stoned • Acts 16 – Paul beaten with rods • After 2 Peter – Peter crucified upside down • After 2 Timothy – Paul beheaded

  11. How do we know that Jesus rose? • Jesus wasn’t the only “messiah” • Women were the first witnesses • The Apostles looked foolish • Their enemies never brought out the body • The Apostles chose to die for their claim

  12. Why it matters to you • John 11:25 • “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live even if he dies.” • His resurrection is His proof that He can keep this promise to you!

  13. Why it matters to you • 1 Corinthians 15:20–22 • But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first-fruits of those who have died. For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.

  14. If I believe He truly rose, then... • …why do I obsess over the things of this world? • …why do I fixate on setbacks and disappointments? • …why don’t I tell more people this good news?!

  15. Easter Not a fairytale, metaphor, tradition… a FACT
