  1. Lesson 8.3 Objective: To find permutations of objects. Vocabulary: Permutation: An arrangement in which order matters is important is called a permutation. EX: John, Steve and Mark are running in a race. How many different ways cane they finish in 1st, 2nd or 3rd place. Factorial 3! = 3 x 2 x 1 = 6

  2. Directions: Make an organize list of all the possible four-letter arrangements using the letters “M” “A” “T” “H” MATH AMTH TMAH HTMA HTAM MAHT AMHT TMHA HATM MTHA AHTM THMA HAMT AHMT MTAH THAM HMAT ATMH MHTA TAMH HMTA MHAT ATHM TAHM 4! 4 x 3 x 2 = 24 arrangements.

  3. Permutations (when the order matters) Example: Six people are running in a race. The top three places get 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize. How many arrangements are there? How many people have a shot at…. 2nd 1st 3rd 4 = 5 • 6 • 120 arrangements P(6,3) multiply the top three numbers.
