  5. Analogical Relating things belonging to different categories in terms of each other Analogy-a comparison between things that are basically dissimilar made for the purpose of illuminating our understanding of the things being compared

Types of analogies Similes Metaphors An explicit comparison between basically dissimilar things made for the purpose of illuminating our understanding of the things being compared An implied comparison between basically dissimilar things made for the purpose of illuminating our understanding of the things being compared

  7. Causal Relating events in terms of the way some event(s) is/are responsible for bringing about other event(s); can be causal chains or contributory causes.

  8. Application Chronological- narrate the most important events of your life thus far Process- explain the process of how to do something that not everyone knows how to do (process analysis) Comparative- compare your current job to your last job, or your current significant other to your last one.

  9. Applications continued Analogical- Think of the most significant thing in your life currently and write a poem about it, using at least one metaphor and one simile Causal Chain-Choose a presidential candidate and describe the chain of events that you think will happen if that candidate wins Contributory Causes- Choose any event in your life whose outcome you feel was caused by several different causal factors.
