  2. Meningitis and Seizures • Remember that among cases of meningitis, 12-27% will present with seizures !!!!!! • Which factors increase likelihood of meningitis? • Suspicious findings on PE • Complex febrile sz • Sz on arrival to ER • Prolonged postictal state • Initial sz after 3 yrs of age

  3. Risk of Recurrence • 30%, However may be higher if: • Age < 15 months • Frequent fevers • Sibling or parent with seizures • Short interval between onset of fever and seizure • Low degree fever before seizure

  4. Risk of Epilepsy • In simple febrile sz, only slightly higher than general population • Risk factors: • Focal, prolonged, repeat <24hrs • 0: 2% • 1: 7% • 2: 20% • 3: 50% • Abnormal neurologic development • Family history of epilepsy
