  2. Inner Planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. These four planets orbit the closest to the sun. Inner planets are made mostly of rock, with few or no moons or rings. These four planets are smaller than the outer planets, and are the most likely to support life.

  3. Outer Planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.These planets orbit farther from the sun than the Inner Planets, separated by an asteroid belt. They’re made up mostly of gases and are much larger than the inner planets, totaling 99% of our solar system’s celestial mass. These four planets also have dozens of moons orbiting them, and have liquid metal cores.

  5. Pluto Pluto was a planet from 1930 until 2006. In 2006, the IAU redefined what a planet was, and the new definition excluded Pluto as a planet and instead relabeled it a Dwarf Planet. This is due to Pluto’s small size and the large number of similar sized objects that have been discovered nearby. Pluto is now seen as the largest member of the Kuiper Belt, a body of frozen liquids similar to the Main Belt.
