  4. Assemblies • An assembly is a group of items that make up a particular structure or portion of a structure such as drywall partition, concrete slab on grade, sewer, road………. • Assemblies enable you to take-off multiple items with a single operation.

Assembly advantages • Increase the speed of takeoff • you select one assembly that contains the items required, not each item individually • Obtain a cost per unit for the assembly • each item cost is added up and based on the assembly calculation it will give you a cost per unit for all items combined Example for driveway: • form work LF = $350, concrete M3 = $2000, granular CY = $850, finishing SF = $700 • assembly unit cost $3.78 / SF.

  6. Assembly advantages / disadvantages • Advantages • items are not forgotten on an individual basis • less time performing estimates • Disadvantages • takes time to develop and create assemblies.

  7. Creating an Assembly • seven steps for building assemblies • plan it - identify the items to be included • assembly ID • assembly description • assembly unit • assembly calculation method • insert items • modify formula when required for each item.

  8. Planning the assembly • Look at a set of drawings and determine what could be items in an assembly • Items that could be part of an assembly are usually items that have common variables • length’ of slab, width’ of slab • height’ of wall, length’ of wall.

  9. Assembly input • Assembly Unit • used to label the cost per unit for the entire assembly • this is usually the most logical unit when applied to the assembly quantity • sewers could be LF • roads could be SF • building footings could be LF • block walls could be SF.

  10. Assembly input • Assembly calculation • method used to calculate the assembly unit for the entire assembly • click the magnifying glass to set up a calculation for the assembly • the procedure is similar to building an item formula • use common variables that are in your assembly items.

Assembly input • Insert button • use this button to add rows to an assembly using any combination of the following commands • Items - inserts the selected items • Item Tables - inserts the selected item tables (not covered in this course) • select at Takeoff - inserts a placeholder for an item to be selected during takeoff • you must select what type of item to be used • you can select multiple items and drag to the grid.

Assembly input • Check item formula • right pick on item formula to display option window • use custom calculation • allows you to create a new formula for the item, specifically for the assembly • used most of the time • edit formula • changes the original item formula • caution • variables should be consistent between items.

  13. Assembly input • Test • use this button to verify that an assembly includes the appropriate variables • does not do any calculations • Select OK to accept assembly • Select Close to exit assembly window.

  14. Assignment • Create assemblies as defined online and start a new takeoff call your name, assembly • Submit at the beginning of the scheduled class.
