Excel Survey Assignment

This survey, conducted by Parveen, Manvir, and Manjot on October 26, 2012, explores the daily time spent by youth on popular social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr, as well as general computer usage. The results revealed that most respondents spent an average of 1-4 hours per day on these platforms, with Facebook being the most widely used, followed by Twitter and then Tumblr. Interestingly, females reported higher engagement with social sites compared to males. The study concludes that youth predominantly use computers for purposes beyond social networking.

Our questions • How many hours a day do you spend on Facebook? • How many hours a day do you spend on Twitter? • How many hours a day do you spend on Tumblr? • How many hours a day do you spend on the computer in general? Why we chose them We chose these questions because today’s youth is using a lot of technology these days. A big thing they use technology for is social networking sites. Social networking sites include Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr. We want to find out which site is the most popular. But, in our last question, we want to find out if they use most of their time on social sites or just going on the computer for homework, listening to music, etc.

  4. How many hours do you spend on Twitter? Most Common Answer: 1 Hour

  5. How many hours do you spend on tumblr? Most Common Answers: 1 Hour – 2 Hours

  6. How many hours do you spend on the computer in general? Most Common Answer: 4 Hours

  7. Our results We were not that surprised at our results! There were not a lot of people that used social networking sites as we had imagined! In fact, we could not use some of the data in our graphs because it was at 0 hours for many people! Females had a higher rate of social networking than males! In fact, a girl had the highest hours on Facebook and Twitter! From this we concluded, that girls are much more social than boys! Clearly they enjoy social networking!

What’s In these Days? • Facebook for the win. • More people use Facebook than any other site. • One person even spends 10 hours a day on Facebook. • Tumblr is the least popular. • Many of the people we asked did not even have Tumblr. • We did expect Facebook to be the top used social networking site. • However, we had a hunch that Twitter may be first because a majority of Facebook users are now converting to Twitter.

  9. Do people use the computer more for social sites or other uses? We wanted to find out which social networking site was the most popular and we already found that out. But, we also wanted to find something else out. We wanted to know if people used the computer mostly for social sites or for other uses. We know this because the most common answer for using the computer in general was 4 hours and the social sites only had their most common answers 1-2 hours. Well, we have come to a conclusion that people use the computer more for other uses than social networking sites.
