  1. Chapter 44

  2. Tom, Jack, Richard • Tom, Jack, Richard: Wemmick’s alias for Magwitch. • Why is Mill Pond Bank a good hiding place for Magwitch? (Tom, Jack, Richard) • 1. It is far away from Pip. • 2. Herbert can visit Clara and Magwitch at the same time so that it isn’t suspicious. • 3. He can escape easily via the Thames River.

  3. Portable Property • And let me impress one important point upon you. Avail yourself of this evening to lay hold of his portable property. You don’t know what may happen to him. Don’t let anything happen to the portable property (189). • What does Wemmick mean by “portable property” and why does he want Pip to “lay hold” of it? • Wemmick’s point with “portable property” is that if Magwitch is caught violating his exile, his money/ property will be forfeited to the English Crown. Since Pip and Magwitch do have this relationship, Wemmick thinks it’s better that Pip finds a way to keep his money.

  4. Pip’s changed attitude towards Magwitch. • Pip tells Magwitch that he doesn’t want to leave him at Mill Pond Bank. We see Pip act in a caring way towards Magwitch for the first time. • Pip’s feelings of betrayal after dealing with Miss Havisham and Estella have taught him to care for those who care about him.

  5. 47- Molly = Estella’s Mother • She was at his elbow when he addressed her, putting a dish upon the table. As she withdrew her hands from it, she fell back a step or two, nervously muttering some excuse. And a certain action of her fingers as she spoke arrested my attention. The action of her fingers was like the action of knitting. She stood looking at her master. Her look was very intent. Surely, I had seen exactly such eyes and such hands on a very memorable occasion very lately (200). • Who is Pip describing in the above passage? Who does this person remind him of? What conclusion does Pip draw at the bottom of the page?
