  1. ABSTRACT The effect of bases on stability and acceptability of Piper betle Linn volatile oil gels with Carbopol 940 as gelling agent. Piper betle Linn. (sirih) volatile oil handgel antiseptic was developed using carbopol 940 as a gelling agent. Carbopol disperse in water to form cloudy solution which are neutralized by strong bases or weak inorganic base thereby increasing the consistency. The objective of this research is to study the effect of TEA, NaOH, NH4OH as neutralizing bases to the stability and acceptability of handgel antiseptic. Evaluation on the viscosity, pH, and acceptability (smoothness, stickness, cooling effect and drying time) were carried out during 8 weeks. Gel with TEA base have viscosity 6,93-7,50 dPaS, and the gels with NaOH, NH4OH have viscosity 2,57-2,78 dPaS and 2,90-3,17 dPaS respectively. pH of TEA gels were 6 ± 0,5 , and the gels with NaOH, NH4OH have pH 7 ± 0,5 and 6 ± 0,5. During 8 weeks evaluation, viscosity of TEA gels showed unstability with coefficient variation value 18,42%, since NaOH and NH4OH gels gave a good stability. The pH all bases gels showed a good stability during evaluation. The evaluation of acceptability (smoothness, stickness, cooling effect and drying time) showed that the gels with NaOH have the highest point in each category. The gel preparation with NaOH showed the most stable and acceptable handgel antiseptic with carbopol 940 as gelling agent. Keywords : Carbopol 940, TEA, NaOH, NH4OH, Handgel preparation, stability, acceptability.
