  1. DEAR STUDENTS Always Remember… • Your are important. • You are special. • I believe in you. • I trust you. • You are listened to. • Your opinion matters. • I care about you. • I respect you. • You are a winner! • I will help you succeed!

  2. Welcome Parents of Park Street School

  3. Park Street School’s Mission Statement Park Street School is dedicated to igniting children’s passions and helping them to overcome their challenges. Therefore Park Street staff will demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to educating the whole child through the use of best educational practices in a world class learning environment.

  4. Park Street School’s Vision Preparing children to achieve their dreams and become model citizens in a global culture. Students will learn the way the world works and how to improve it.

  5. Our Goals • To give your children the academic and social skills they need. • To provide a supportive and fun classroom environment. • To help your children make new friends and discover new interests. • To foster a love of learning. • To help your children grow at their own pace.

  6. Our Classrooms: “Home Away From Home” • We want your children to feel safe and cared for when they are away from you. In our “Home Away From Home”, we have rights and responsibilities to help us get along with each other. • Park Street’s ‘Golden Rule’ is to “treat others the way you want to be treated”. Each class has developed their own set of rights and responsibilities based around this ‘Golden Rule’.

  7. Reading • Our team follows a balanced literacy approach, including: -Read alouds, -Shared reading, -Flexible guided reading groups -Independent reading

  8. Home Reading • At the beginning of each week your child is provided with home reading books. The expectation is that at the end of each week your child returns the books. This is important as many times we need the books to go home the following week with other students. We realize that by times some books may need to stay with a child for longer than a week, please send it back at the end of the week with a note clarifying the need to keep it longer. • The expectation is that each night your child read the selected books. Even if he/she has read them, please do not return them early, it is always beneficial for students to reread books a few times in order to improve fluency and to solidify comprehension.

  9. Home Reading • Approximately every 5-6 weeks your child will be assessed in reading in order to provide both home and school with updated information regarding his/her progress. During this time home reading books will not be sent home however we encourage them to read books they have at home.

  10. Writing • Continuing with the balanced literacy approach, writing consists of: -Word work -Spelling practice -Modeled writing -Shared writing -Flexible guided writing -Independent writing

  11. Writing On a regular basis you will notice your child arriving home with a marked piece of writing. This is what we call a demand piece of writing and it shows both home and school where you child is at with regards to independent writing. Please take the time to go over this with your child. Also please know that in order for a child to receive appropriate achievement (AA) all traits need to be appropriate. If even one trait is below appropriate achievement (BAA) then the entire writing piece is below. This follows the Department of Education grade two provincial marking guidelines.

  12. Interventions ~ UNB Nursing students ~ LIPS ~ Seeing Stars ~ Guidance ~ Special Education Plans ~ Individual Behaviour Support Plans ~ Flexible Groupings…etc.

  13. Math ~ Students will work on monthly outcomes, as well As, regularly review concepts learned in previous months. ~ The students will also work with mental math and number and word problems. ~ Your children will also participate in flexible math groupings. ~ IXL Math is a fun and interactive website for your child to practice math skills and concepts at home. This supports the personalized approach to teaching math at Park Street School.

  14. You and Your World • This subject incorporates health, personal development, career planning, science and social studies all in one. • Mindfulness, Rights Respecting and Leader in Me are also incorporated into You and Your World. • Park Street School is also fortunate enough to offer Japanese and Chinese cultural experiences for our students. What an amazing opportunity for them AND they love it!

  15. Physical Education We are very pleased to have Erin McAuley, our Physical Education specialist, in the school to teach your children. Your child receives Phys.Ed. instruction in the gym twice a each week.

  16. Music Mr. Jeffery Zaat (aka…the Zaatman) is a musician and your child’s teacher. Your child receives Music instruction twice each week.

  17. Agenda We will be checking the Agenda each morning for your initials and any notes that you want us to see. Loose notes often get missed.

  18. Tardiness • School starts at 8:10 A.M. and ends at 1:55 P.M.; Wednesdays at 12:10 P.M. • Did you know? If your child arrives at 8:30 each morning, over the year, it is the equivalent of 14.5 days absent. That’s almost 3 entire weeks of valuable learning time…GONE!

  19. Snacks • Please send along a healthy recess snack with your child’s lunchand although you all want to make sure your child has plenty to eat, recess snack is simply that, a snack time • We do have severe allergies to peanut butter, nuts, fish, and dairy products. Please be aware and sensitive to these allergies. Nuts and fish are prohibited.

  20. School Hours A reminder that school supervision starts at 7:50am each day on the playground unless it is an inclement weather day. If you drop off your child please check the playground to see if there are students out there, if there are then please make sure your child leaves your vehicle and goes to the playground where supervision is provided. Once orchestra gets up and running we realize those students will be arriving early some mornings. That being said please remember that siblings not in orchestra need to be on the playground no earlier than 7:50am but as well not in the school prior to the 8:10am bell.

  21. Independence • It is important to encourage your child to become increasingly more independent. Please allow your child to grow in this area by: ~ pack and unpack their own belongings each morning & afternoon ~ tie their own shoelaces, ~dress/undress themselves Your children will surprise you so let’s give them the opportunity to rise to the occasion. After all, they do it when you’re not here;)

  22. School Website • Please check the school website daily. Be sure to also click on your child’s “Teacher Page” for important information, special classroom events, reminders, calendar items, etc… Park Street Elementary This is something we take a lot of time to do, please help us by showing that our efforts are worthwhile.

  24. What’s Coming to Park Street? • What’s Coming to Park Street? • We are the First Rights Respecting School in Atlantic Canada • Mindfulness • Imaginative Education - LiD

  25. What is a Rights Respecting School? • Park Street has partnered with the Office of the Child &Youth Advocate and Unicef to undergo staff training on the UN Declaration of Human Rights. • Staff and students will embark on a journey in learning more about our rights and how to advocate for the rights of others around the world. • Our assembly launch is Friday,Sept. 20 at 10:30. You are invited!

  26. What is Mindfulness? • Mindfulness means maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment. By doing this we are better able to learn, make positive choices and control our reactions. • Teachers have begun to introduce mindfulness to the students through lessons, stories, yoga and other mindful practices like breathing and positive thinking.

  27. Learning in Depth • Otherwise known as LiD • “Learning in Depth” is designed to ensure that all students become experts about something during their school years. Each child is given a particular topic to learn about through her or his whole school career, in addition to the usual curriculum, and builds a personal portfolio on the topic. • It is designed to transform their experience as learners. • The more we know about a topic the more creative we become in all areas.

  28. Stay Tuned… • You will be hearing more about these three areas as the year progresses. • It is our goal that these opportunities and learning experiences help to achieve the vision and mission we have for all students and staff at Park Street School.

  29. Thank you for coming this evening. Let’s Have a Great Year!
