This resource outlines the Measures of Student Learning (MSLs), also known as Common Exams, specifically focusing on Constructed Response (CR) or Performance Items used in high school and middle school science assessments. It details the assessment framework, including subject areas like Earth Science, Chemistry, Physics, and Applied Science, providing guidelines for completing paper-pencil exams with a 90-minute duration. The document includes links to essential reference materials and online scoring modules for teachers, alongside strategies for writing effective constructed responses.

Science PLC: Scoring Constructed Response/performance Items High School/Middle School March 28, 2013
DPI’s nomenclature problem: • Measures of Student Learning (MSLs) are also known as Common Exams • Constructed Response (CR) Items a.k.a. Performance Items (MSLs = CEs CR = PI DPI ≠ Dill Pickles are Icky) MSLs will have Constructed Response items, EOGs/EOCs do not...yet
Science MSLs • Earth/Environmental Science • Chemistry • Physics • Physical Science • OCS Applied Science • 6th and 7th Grade Science • (4th Grade Science if not also teaching Math or LA)
MSLs: • Paper pencil • 90 minutes long including general instructions and breaks • Constructed Response Items graded by teachers, then tests are scanned
HS Reference Materials: • Student should have access to these when taking the MSL • Physics, Chemistry, and Physical Science pdfs can be downloaded from: http://www.waynecountyschools.org/Page/19135
Online Module for Scoring Constructed Response items: • https://center.ncsu.edu/nc/enrol/index.php?id=167311 • This link is on WCPS Science webpage, 6-12 Teacher Resources, under Assessment info • This link takes you to where you did the NC Falcon stuff
Released Constructed Response items: • http://www.ncpublicschools.org/effectiveness-model/measures/released-items/ • This link is also on WCPS Science webpage
Constructed Response strategies: Example question with a 4 point rubric: Explain the term “latent heat”. Describe two types of latent heat and give an example of latent heat for a substance. 1 2 3 4
Paragraph style answer: 2 Latent heat is ….. Two types of latent heat are… and … An example of latent heat….. 1 4 3
Graphic style answer: Latent heat is... 1 Two types are …… The other kind is… 2 One kind is … 3 An example would be … 4
Bullet or number list: • Latent heat is ….. Two types of latent heat are • … • … • An example of latent heat... 1 2 3 4
