  2. Why Migrate from VMWare to Hyper-v 2012 R2

  3. Why Migrate from VMWare to Hyper-v 2012 R2 • Windows Server 2012 R2 Editions: Enterprise class scalability and similar capabilities in all Windows Server 2012 R2 Editions ( standard / enterprise / datacentre editions), which saves cost without need to upgrade to use various features. • Hardware: Deep integration with storage such as Offloaded Data Transfer (ODX), core san capabilities, PIO support ( device specific modules ) . VMWare can be performed based on edition specific which adds more cost • Performance: • Virtual Machine can now connect to Guest physical adapter rather than synthetic adapter. • Supports Single Root I/O Virtualization ( SRIOV) which is an extension to PCIe Express that enables multiple VM’s to share same PCIe physical hardware resources. • less CPU utilization and still live migrate a VM with or without SRIOV enabled. • with VMWare SRIOV enabled Virtual machine is locked and cannot live migrate. • Resource Management : QOS does exists for all the editions on Windows Server 2012 R2 editions

  4. Why Migrate from VMWare to Hyper-v 2012 R2 • 5) VM migration : • Live migration compression which compress and live migrate VM quickly. • With RDMA (SMBdirect) on physical host , we can utilize SMBDirect to accelerate live migration traffic • 6) Networking : VMWare virtual switch is locked down where only solution is to replace with cisco solution etc.. where as Hyper-v Virtual Switch is completlyextensible and 3rd party vendors can seamlessly integrate their solutions • 7) Network Virtualization : VLAN challenges, workload management and network performance are the key for any Virtualized solution, with VMWare NSX has additional cost even with the highest version where as with Windows Server 2012 R2 the features are free of cost • 8) Host clustering : Hyper-v provides comprehensive support on Guest level clustering eg: SQL Server Clusters, Windows server clustering, which allows sharing single shared VHDX file without exposing underlying physical storage.

  5. Why Migrate from VMWare to Hyper-v 2012 R2 • 9) Replication : Hyper-v replica is inbuilt with "Near-synchronous replication" between host-host-host ( A-B-C ) tertiary replication capability is possible. Smallest replication windows is 30 seconds. In VMWare its A-B replication and replication window is 15 minutes

  8. Hyper-v 2012 R2 Management Capability

  9. Datacenter Analysis • Microsoft Datacenter TCO Tool: • Compares the TCO of running a Microsoft datacenter solution based on WS2012 R2, SC2012 R2 and Microsoft Azure to a VMWare solution consisting of the VCloudsuite and VCloudhybrid service • When To use TCO ? • Existing VMWare customers that are considering migration their VShpere infrastructure to Hyper-v or want to run new workloads on hyper-v • What is the Output ? • Customized report including payback period for migration investment ( in months ), total savings over three years ( year by year cash flow ) compared to VMWare and TCO comparisons • Where to download ? • http://www.datacentertcotool.com/
