Symptoms of Down Syndrome • The most common are… • A flat face • Short neck • Lack of muscle tone • Smaller than normal size • Wide feet with short toes • Various learning disabilities Down syndrome can also lead to more serious problems like… •Alzheimer’s disease •Immune system problems •Mental retardation •Premature aging •Seizure disorders •Delays in development •Eye and Hearing problems •Congenital heart disease

How Does Down Syndrome Affect the Everyday Life? • Known as Trisomy 21, Down syndrome is an autosomal mutation that arises as a result of an extra 21 chromosome, making the person with this mutation have 47 total chromosomes instead of the normal 46. It is not autosomal dominant or recessive because the mutation is generally not passed on. • People with Down syndrome can do most of the things that everyone else can. But, they generally learn it at a slower pace or later than most. Looking from a social point of view, it can be seen how the different facial and bodily features can make life difficult. Of course, there is always the possibility of surgically altering one’s appearance. However, that can be costly and has huge margins for error.   4. Treatment for Down Syndrome • Because Down syndrome is the result of having a trisomy of chromosome 21, there is no cure. But, some treatments for its symptoms are: • Surgery • •Regular checkups and screening • •Certain medications • Counseling and support (the most important from an emotional point of view)

Interesting Facts • The name "Down syndrome" originated from Dr. Langdon Down, the physician who was the first to explain his collection of findings in 1866. • The cause of Down syndrome, a trisomy of chromosome #21, was not known until it was discovered in 1959 by a French doctor named Jerome Lejeune. • According to About Down Syndrome “1 in 800 babies are born with Down Syndrome.” • 80% of the babies born with Down syndrome are born to mothers who are younger than 35 years old.
