Preparation of the Gifts • CLASS ACTIVITY: • Role Play as a class or in groups the congregation (people) brining up the gifts to the priest at the altar. • You will need: A Priest, 3-4 People, The gifts This part is when the gifts (the bread and wine) are bought to the altar. This part is also called the “offertory procession”

  4. Eucharistic Prayer In this part, we give thanks to Jesus and the bread and wine become and body and blood of Jesus Christ though the works of the Holy Spirit.

  5. Eucharistic Prayer • CLASS ACTIVITY: • Teacher holds up a red candle to represent the Holy Spirit. • Teacher holds up a brown candle to represent the bread. • Teachers holds up a purple candle to represent the wine. • Teacher mixes the flames of the Holy Spirit Candle and the bread candle together whilst the students say: “Take this all of you and eat it, this is my body which will be given up for you”. • Teacher then mixes the flames of the Holy Spirit candle with the flame of the wine candle whilst the students say: “Take this all of you and eat it, this is my blood which will be given up for you”. • Teacher states that in the mass, this represents the Holy Spirit transforming the bread and wine into the body and blood of Jesus Christ. • Remind students that even though they are saying the words, only the Priest has the power to change the bread & wine into the body & blood of Jesus. • Teacher may also show the video from ‘Together at one Altar’ so that the students are able to view what the Priest actually does and says to bless the bread and wine. Whilst this is occuring, discuss the symbols in the Mass and what they represent. • http://www.togetheratonealtar.catholic.edu.au/receive/dsp-content.cfm?loadref=46

  6. The Lord’s Prayer • CLASS ACTIVITY: • Students will use the YouTube Video below to sing the ‘Our Father’ whilst the teacher displays the words on the board (The next slide). The students may also make up actions for the prayer and do them while they sing it if they like. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLQ4OqlMhrQ This part is when we say the ‘Our Father’. This is the prayer that Jesus taught us in the bible so it helps us to give thanks and praise to him.

  7. The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, Who art in heaven,Hallowed be Thy Name.Thy Kingdom come.Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,as we forgive those who trespass against us.And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

  8. Sign of Peace • CLASS ACTIVITY: • The teacher models how to give the greeting of peace to one of the students during the mass using the words “Peace be with you”. • The students can then practice giving the greeting of peace to the people around them. • Remind the students to only do it to 3-4 people so that the sign of peace can stay meaningful. In this part, we share the greeting of Peace that we have been given in mass to our neighbours (the people around us). Remember what we learnt about greetings at the start of this unit: the sign of peace is a type of greeting!

  9. Communion & Prayer After Communion This part is when the people receive the great gifts that Jesus left us. When the priest says: ‘Body of Christ’ The people reply: ‘Amen’ – This means that we believe that it is the body of the Christ. The people may choose if they want to receive the wine (blood of Christ) after that. For the Blood – The priest says: ‘Blood of Christ’ The people reply: ‘Amen’ When everyone has received the Eucharist, the priest then says a prayer to bless the congregation.

  10. Communion & Prayer after Communion Prayer after communion: PRIEST: Let us pray.God of salvation, may this sacrament, which strengthens us  here on earth bring us to eternal life. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. PEOPLE: Amen.

  11. Communion & Prayer after Communion • CLASS ACTIVITY: • The students practice what they are to say when they receive the communion. This will prepare them for when they have their first Holy Communion. • The teacher may also watch the video of the ‘Liturgy of the Eucharist’ is the students are unable to attend mass so that the students can view how it occurs, discussing the symbols and words that occur and the significance of them. • http://www.togetheratonealtar.catholic.edu.au/receive/dsp-content.cfm?loadref=46
