  3. What do we mean by team work? A team is a collection of interdependent individuals who work together, generally over a period of time, in order to achieve a common goal. Sometimes refers to committees or task forces in certain organizations.

  4. What do we mean by team work? workplace teams should not surprise us, after all, human beings are “social animals” who tend in general gravitate toward groups, we play sport in groups, worship in groups,….etc

  5. Workplace team work benefits Teams have been at the core of organization efforts to achieve the following objectives: • reduce the time it takes to bring anew product to mark it . • collaborate with business partner around the world . • reengineer the design of work process • increase sales and improve after sales support • Improve the quality of products

  6. Workplace team work benefits There is seem to be a consensus about the benefits: • Morale among workers tends to be higher and absenteeism is less • Customer satisfaction increase since team focus on ways to improve the quality of products

  7. Factors of effective team • Clear goals • Capable team members (technical experts, problem solvers, good communication skills and trained in work team process) • Commitment to excellence (stems from members )

Factors of effective team • Outside recognition (not only self satisfaction, team need to receive management recognition ) • Collaborative climate (rapport with one another, honest and trust, to enhance the climate members need to feel valued , a collaborative climate develops when members experience inter dependence )

Stages of team development • form stage (identify the strength and weaknesses, define their task) • norm stage (clarifying goals, then assigning who will do what , by when and how, …etc) • work stage (The primary purpose of this stage is for the team to begin substantive work on their goals involves gathering information to complete the task )

  10. Stages of team development • Storm stage (resolve any disagreement that may occur.) • perform stage (At this point the team has completed its assigned task and its ready to present the work.)

  11. Positive team skills • Accountability. • Trust worthiness. • Spirit of cooperation. • Respectfulness. • Enthusiasm. • Willingness to resolve conflicts.

  12. Positive team skills • Accountability. To be accountable means to be responsible,Team member need to be clear on their responsibilities to assure one another that they can be counted on.

  13. Positive team skills • Trustworthiness. Trust worthiness results when members are accountable however trust is built when members open and honest with each other.

  14. Positive team skills • Spirit of cooperation. Cooperation is generated when members are willing to be flexible , open minded , and able to compromise when necessary.

  15. Positive team skills • Respectfulness. Respect is evidenced when members given the opportunity to voice their views and when all members are demonstrate courtesy in their interaction with fellow team members.

  16. Positive team skills • Enthusiasm: When team member approach their work with interest and enthusiasm they set in motion an energy that keeps them focused and on track

  17. Positive team skills • Willingness to resolve conflicts. Conflicts likely to occur from time to time, effective team have a Varity of strategies for working through conflicts while keeping relationships intact

Organize the team: • Recruiting (voluntary, member have the choice, num. of participant 5 to 7) • Training the members: (All members need to understand the company’s philosophy and goals, members should be offered suggestion for maximizing their productivity within the team, Each team needs to be given clear direction as to it’s purpose .)

Teamwork tools • Identifying roles: (The role which each member should play) • Selecting meeting format: (At this step the team must decide how often they will meet , when they will meet in order to accomplish their assigned task) • Determining a team assessment method: (Teams do a quick check of their performance ) • Identifying methods of conflict resolution. (substantive or personal)

  21. Teamwork tools b. Member and leader responsibilities: • Members should attend, prepare, stay involved and need to adhere the meeting • Leader should set meeting agenda, encourage participation, keep discussion on track, clarify and summarize and facilitate problem solving

Employ problem solving approach: • define the problem: having a clear understanding of the problem they are facing. • analyze the problem: demands that team members explore the problem in greater depth to determine it’s sop. • establish criteria for a solution: here the team needs to prepare a list of requirements that a solution must meet.

Teamwork tools • consider possible solution: The step is where “brain storming “ takes place and team members are able to exercise their creativity the goal of brain storming is to generate as many solution as possible. • select a solution : Now the team members are ready to examine the solution in step.

  24. Teamwork tools • implement the solution : This step occurs only after the team has a detailed plan for putting their proposed solution into effect. • follow up the solution : This step requires either the team or management to evaluate the success of the solution after it has been

  25. Teamwork tools d. Communicate team progress: The final tool that teams need is a way of keeping records of their work as it progress, they need to document each meeting for the benefit of themselves and maybe for those outside the group such as management

Communicate team progress: document include date, place, meeting minutes, members, members that absent, topics that discussed, decision made, and follow up action required and signature of member who prepared the minutes. (should be clear,concise, accurate and easy to read) see the sample page in page 138
