  1. ECAT August 2005 13_ ECAT Condensed Alternate 2005

  2. Technical ToolsSupport Numerous Processes in Design for Sourcing Emerson Confidential 2

  3. ECATSupplier Process Capability Analysis • Supply Base Management • Step 1: TechSource • Enables “pre-screening” of suppliers • Characterizes supplier attributes (not whether they are good or bad) • Step 2: Emerson Capability Assessment Tool (ECAT) • Gives supplier capability – tells if good or bad • Statistically analyzes the suppliers process capability

  4. ECAT OverviewWhat is ECAT? • A Microsoft Excel based statistical tool that allows you to analyze your supplier’s manufacturing process data to determine their process capability

  5. ECAT OverviewWhat are the Objectives of ECAT? • Statistically analyze a Supplier’sprocessing data • Same results as Minitab Software – just a user-friendly interface • Determine a Supplier’s process capability • Evaluate a Supplier’s ability to keep their process instatistical control • Predict product conformance Goal: Understand our Supplier’s Process Capability

  6. 100% of the time, 99% of the time… This week and next? LSL USL ECAT OverviewEnables Us to Understand Our Supplier’s Performance What does “we meet your specifications” mean? Area outside the specification limits represent quality losses (Reference: Wemple, 1999)

  7. Is Your Supplier on Target?Defective Parts Cost Money Defects Defects Defects Defects ECAT Will Answer the Question Emerson Confidential 7 (Reference: Hoechst Aktiengesellschaft, 15)

  8. ECAT OverviewThe Outputs Include the Scorecard and Xbar & R charts Summary of all Critical to Quality (CTQ) parameters Detailed analysis for EACH CTQ Emerson Confidential 8 The supplier’s own data is imported here

  9. ECAT OverviewWhy Should I Use ECAT? • Uses actual supplier data – quantative tool • Gives both an absolute and relative measure of supplier quality • Analyzes supplier datato: • Characterize the supplier’s manufacturing process • Determine whether or not the process is “in-control” • Determine specification conformance • Calculate the Capability Indices (Cp, Cpk, Pp, Ppk) • ECAT predicts: • Your product conformance • Your supplier’s conformance (sort-to-ship issues) • CTQ conformance

  10. Emerson Inputs Analysis Outputs Supplier Inputs Critical to Quality (CTQ) Parameters Processing Data Process Capability Scorecard Data Sheet Option 1: CTQs Known ECAT 2004 (Analysis File) Xbar & R Charts Option 2: CTQs Not Known ECAT Tool StructureInputs and Outputs Emerson Confidential 10

  11. ECAT – Who Does What?Administering the Tool • Emerson engineering must determine the Critical to Quality (CTQ) parametersANDtolerances required to meet product requirements • Emerson sends the Supplier a Data Collection file (Excel file) with the CTQs identified • May be part specific or commodity specific • Supplier will select an Emerson part, if possible, otherwise an ‘Emerson-like’ part and collect processing data. Part should be of similar complexity and produced using the same manufacturing processes (ideally same equipment) • Supplier will take measurements on 5 consecutive parts at 25 separate time intervals for a total of 125 measurements per CTQ. (As detailed in instructions) • Emerson will evaluate the data

  12. Instruction Documentation varying levels of detail Analysis File Generic Data Collection Worksheet Commodity Specific Data Collection Worksheet ECAT Tool StructureSeveral Files with each ECAT Release

  13. CTQs are RequiredIdentify Correct Data Collection File to Use Which file do I send to the Supplier? Are the CTQs defined by engineering? Yes No Is a Commodity Specific Data Collection File available? Define the CTQs for your part or commodity No Yes

  14. Input: Supplier’s Process DataExample Generic Data Collection Workbook Step by step instructions for the Supplier to follow Information on the CTQ, Part, Measurements, Specification Limits Data sheet to record Measurements (25 sets of 5 measurements =125) Comment area for Supplier to use Emerson Confidential 14

  15. Analysis: ECAT 2004Emerson Staff Import Supplier’s Data • This file is proprietary to Emerson, do NOT send it to anyone outside of Emerson.

  16. Outputs: Supplier Process CapabilitySupplier Scorecard and Data Sheets • Supplier Scorecard • Cp, Cpk, Pp, Ppk • PPM • In or Out of Control • Etc. • Data Sheet • Supplier’s Data • Distribution of Data • Xbar and R charts • Supplier Comments • Etc. Emerson Confidential 16

  17. Technical Tools to Support Procurement Understanding Savings Opportunity, Risks & Supply Base Understanding the Parts Understanding the Suppliers Emerson Confidential 17

  18. ECAT Makes Supplier Evaluation as Easy As: ECAT Analysis Supplier Data Specification Evaluation (Reference: Wemple, 1999)

  19. ECAT Training • Very detailed training package is available in PowerPoint and Adobe • Training Presentation goes through step by step how to use the software
