  1. MRI: Acquisition of Imaging X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy System for Interdisciplinary Research and Education in Multi-Scale Materials Andrei V. Stanishevsky, University of Alabama at Birmingham, DMR 0922910 (c) (b) (a) This MRI award supported a PHI5000 Versaprobe, an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) system designed for spatially resolved chemical analysis of very thin layers of solid materials. This tool has started its operation in March 2010, and has created new multi-user materials analysis facility at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The tool supports currently the research on four NSF grants. It has provided crucial insights into the understanding of interfaces and surface phenomena in functionalized nano-diamond surfaces (DMR-0806521), GaN-based semiconductors (DMR-1006163), and specifics of chemical bonding in polymer nanofibers (DMR-0728258) and high-pressure treated metals and semiconductors (DMR-0703891). XPS 1x1 mm2 chemical map of (a) Ga, (b) N, and (c) Al in the surface layer of GaN High-resolution scans of micro-, nano-, and ultranano- crystalline diamond XPS survey scans of virgin, H2,and O2-terminated NCD surfaces

  2. MRI: Acquisition of Imaging X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy System for Interdisciplinary Research and Education in Multi-Scale Materials Andrei V. Stanishevsky, University of Alabama at Birmingham, DMR 0922910 • This multi-user XPS tool has become a part of core shared analytical facilities at the UAB-wide interdisciplinary Center for Nanoscale Materials and Biointegration (CNMB). • Major broader activities: • Since April 2010, we provided practical demonstrations and hands-on training to seventeen students (30% women and minority) and researchers (five trainees were graduate students from the Technical University of Lodz (Poland), a partner institution in our Materials World Network project). • Three REU students used this XPS tool in their summer 2010 projects. • New laboratory module has been developed for PH732 course (Part II, Spring 2011, expected enrollment 15). Dr. Saad Alnabulsi from PHI gives a practice seminar to UAB students and postdocs during the advanced training of major users of the PHI5000 imaging microprobe XPS instrument
