  2. There may be no word in the English Bible that quickens the beat of a sinner’s heart more than that of “forgiveness.”

  5. Forgiveness is not extended unconditionally.

  6. Psa 103:12 “As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us”

  7. Isaiah 38:17 “Behold, for peace I had great bitterness: but thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption: for thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back”

  11. The Greeks used this term of “washing out” the ink from a papyrus sheet so that it might be used for writing again (Moulton 1963, 221).

  13. “redemption” is used as an equivalent for “forgiveness.” Eph 1:7 “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace”

  45. 3. Implications

  46. Implications The idea of forgiveness stirs the soul and has some intriguing implications.

  47. First, “forgiveness” implies an offense. If there is no breach of propriety, no forgiveness is needed.

  48. 1 John 3:4 “Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law”

  49. Second, forgiveness implies the personal inability to remedy the violation of law.

  50. Matt 18:27 “Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt”
