  1. Brian GilmoreUniversity of Edinburgh PKI Co-ordination in Europe CAMP

  2. TERENA • The organisation which coordinates Education and Research Networking in Europe • Holds PKI Coordination meetings • 3 held • 21 at last meeting in November • Next meeting is on 14th March CAMP

  3. PKI Coordination • Serves to enable information on activities which tend to be still at pilot rather than National level to be shared • Will be ever more important as the use of PKI grows CAMP

  4. EuroPKI • EuroPKI is a body in Italy, originally funded by the EU that: • Created a hierarchical structure for Europe • Validates CP/CPS from submitting organisation • Org can be National Research Network or other body • IE, City council (Milan in Italy) CAMP

  5. EuroPKI - 2 • Current policy is to only recognise one assurance level – corresponds best to Medium level of Federal Bridge. • In November, membership was 4 Int’l members + 4 extra Italian Orgs. • Expected 3 more Int’l by end 2001 CAMP

  6. PKI Initiatives in Europe • SURFnet (Netherlands) • Operational SURFnet CA has certified 8 orgs with 2 more expected (Mainly/all Universities) • RedIRIS (Spain) • IRIS-PCA provides a PKI base for Spanish Universities and research Organisations. • Causes problems integrating existing PKIs! CAMP

  7. PKI Initiatives – 2 • SWITCH (Switzerland) • Has set up a project to provide Authentication and Authorisation • Main motivation is to support the Swiss Virtual Campus • GNOMIS (Scandinavian) • Norway, Sweden and Finland Univ. have been meeting to co-ord A&A CAMP

  8. GRID • Big users of PKI • But, they tend, currently, to have set it up to provide the PKI only to their own users • Centralised CAs eg, only one for the UK • So re-engineering will be necessary to scale up their work to large numbers of users. CAMP

  9. Finally UK • Currently has a legacy system to enable all Higher Ed and Further Ed (4 million users) to access UK wide licensed databases and sources (some 130). • Very seriously considering commissioning a PKI system to replace the legacy system • Level of assurance can be low, really just want to know that someone is a ‘member’ of a given institution. CAMP
