Slide 2:A Better Way to Get Answers

Scientific information is scattered in disparate locations and must be accessed by multiple applications. Scientists do not fully utilize applications and electronic content Too time consuming Too many applications to learn The research of scientists will be more productive if all content is centrally integrated, indexed and linked With ~one query, DiscoveryGate connects you to many information sources, giving you the information you need to decide what to do next.

Slide 3:DiscoveryGate - A better way to get answers

The first stop for chemistry facts and details The portal to best-of-breed databases in chemistry The integrated tool to enable researchers to find relevant scientific details The most effective way to provide the most chemistry data to the most researchers Elsevier is happy to show you DiscoveryGate. DiscoveryGate is a Web-based single integrated platform for academic researchers to be able to locate factual data from a wide variety of chemistry and life science databases and Major Reference Works. DiscoveryGate offers institutional access to more than 17 databases, all from a single interface. The databases are interlinked to be able to easily navigate between records in order to find related information, similar chemical compounds and reactions and other details, all without having to perform additional queries. For librarians and Information Specialists, DiscoveryGate’s easy-to-use administration interface allows you customize all bibliographic links to reflect your own access and entitlements, as well as to simply integrate directly with your own internal library management tools or link resolvers. DiscoveryGate’s institutional license allows all users with entitlements to a university’s scientific resources to have access to DiscoveryGate, with no restrictions on the number of concurrent users. Slide 4:Comprehensive chemistry

17 premier chemistry databases Links to full text – to over 15,000 journals and patent archives Authoritative Major Reference Works More than 16 million compounds More than 11 million reactions More than 300 million associated facts & data

    Slide 5:Key Content

Primary Content - Original Literature Sources Publications containing detailed descriptions, methodology and scientific results (journals, patents, proprietary original work) Secondary Content—Databases Synthesis, bioactivity, physical property, metabolism, toxicity and sourcing databases Tertiary Content—Authoritative Reference Works Well regarded core knowledge summarizing a particular topic

    Slide 9:DiscoveryGate features

Slide 10:Find relevant records using known properties

Slide 11:Search across an index of structures and properties

Select the Compound Index and perform a structure and property search Returns summary data from the primary source Click directly into primary databases for more detail

    Slide 12:Focused database searches

Slide 13:Single view of results from multiple sources

Search across an index of compounds from MDL and selected 3rd party databases Search by property and structure Currently 8 million unique structures Can be filtered by property type A unique “map” of which compounds & detailed data exist Interlinks to the underlying specific database for detailed review of the underlying data

Slide 14:Extend research to the full text

Leverage existing subscriptions by linking automatically from citations to corresponding full text and patents. Librarians can: Manage links on DiscoveryGate or Point to internal library link resolver All bibliographic AND patent references are hyperlinked: Always view the primary literature where you have subscribed access

Review a compound list excerpted in CrossFire Beilstein from a citation found in Scopus View additional data from the CrossFire Beilstein Database for a compound of interest via DiscoveryGate (or Commander if on PC and preferred)

    Slide 17:What is “fact” data?

Cited experimental value from journals The journal list is not fact data Fact data is not required, because we always refer to original articles?! Save Time and Money! You have to wait for several days to obtain journals from other libraries. ????????????????????????????????????????? ????????????????????????????? ?????????????? ??????????????????????????????????? ??????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????????????????? ????????????????????????????????? ????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ????????????????????????????? ?????????????? ??????????????????????????????????? ??????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????????????????? ????????????????????????????????? ????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????????????????????

UV/Vis Plural maximum absorbance with corresponding molar absorption coefficient are available.

Slide 18:Example Fact Data from DiscoveryGate / Beilstein

Pharmacological data Apoptosis inhibition data with experimental summary.

    Slide 19:Help!

I cannot log into SciFinder Scholar always! Why not? SciFinder Scholar has the limitation of access number. DiscoveryGate has NOT such limitation! Every time, Every Day available.

    Slide 20:SciFinder is Better…

I need the latest information about Taxol. Daily updates, collection from all chemical journals I need the patent information for Taxol. SciFinder collects patent information from 50 patent offices in the world. ???SciFinder?????????????????? ??????????????????????????????????? ???????????SciFinder???????? Slide 21:Have to use DiscoveryGate -Fact data will help your searching! -

Sulfone (not sulfonic acid) with less than pKa 11. What kind of X and Y are suitable? ???????????????Beilstein???! DiscoveryGate has not “Auto Fix”! The “ambiguity” reaction search is available DiscoveryGate, not SciFinder. ????pKa?11???????(?????????) ???????????X,Y??????????? ???????????????????????????????????????? Slide 22:DiscoveryGate vs. SciFinder

Which is better? DiscoveryGate Fact data, Reference Value, no access limitation number Beilstein, Gmelin SciFinder Scholar Exhaustive Bibliographic data with access limitation number Chemical Abstracts (CAplus, REGISTRY) Reported measured properties, and reaction data Bibliographic information

    Slide 23:Summary

    Slide 24:Key values for users

More data More explicit data than can be found via standard A&I database search More comprehensive data than corresponding records in other products Integrated Mine a vast pool of scientific information sources via a single query Integrates Elsevier and MDL sources with other key information sources E.g. Derwent, ISI, Wiley, Springer Supports full-text linking with native (or any local OpenURL) link resolver Open NO USER LIMITS! Site licence model lets all researchers access at any time Easy to manage IP recognition, site-wide access
