Lead • Lead -- Usually one sentence that tells who, what where, when, why and how. It is found at the beginning of the story • Let's look at some examples
Headline • Title of the story • A good newspaper headline is concise, informative and, at times, entertaining. When you write a newspaper headline, your goal is to hook the reader into reading the article • Let's check out today's paper
Byline • Author of text
Quote • Exactly what someone said, and is in quotation marks.
News Story • A story that is timely and describes an event of interest • Hard news stories move briskly through the five W's and the H, packing in just enough detail to give readers a clear picture of the news. Immediacy is everything in hard news.
Feature Story • A human interest story that is not closely tied to a recent news event. • Bare facts are surrounded by elaboration, interpretation, mood, context, detailed description, emotion, irony and humor.
Angle • Once you have a story idea, decide exactly what focus you want to emphasize. Your focus is the angle you want for the story.
Editorial • A writer tells his or her opinion about a subject.
Interview Questions • Always ask open-ended questions • If your question solicits a yes or no answer, it is not open-ended • Always ask ‘why’ • Develop questions before the interview • Be ready to ask new questions depending on the answers you get
Inverted Pyramid • In a news story, the most important information goes at the top, leaving less important details for last.
