Day One: Monday, December 2, 2013 • Quiet Question: Type One Prompt---To introduce the class to the geography of Africa, we are going to watch a few short film clips from United Streaming. • As we watch the film clips, you should be taking notes in the provided Main Idea Graphic Organizer. • Film Clips: • “A Look at Africa”----4 minutes and 42 seconds • “Segment Three: Geography of Africa”----5 minutes and 20 seconds • “Geographical Features of Africa”----5 minutes and 6 seconds • “Basic Geographical Facts of Africa”---3 minutes and 2 seconds • “Climates of Africa”---1 minute and 34 seconds

  4. Day One: Monday, December 2, 2013 • Pair-Share: Turn to your partner and share and compare your Main Idea Graphic Organizer notes. Add or revise information. • Class: Ms. Barben is going to begin her Geography of Africa Powerpoint, and you are to take notes in the provided Geography Graphic Organizer. • Homework: Begin to label and color-code the Political and Physical Maps of Africa. • Chunking: • Night One: Mon Dec 2 • Label the countries in BLACK pen and in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS written HORIZONTALLY on the Political Map. • Draw in South Sudan. • Night Two: Tues Dec 3 • Label the cities in RED pen written horizontally on the Political Map. • Label the bodies of water in BLACK pen written HORIZONTALLY and color in the bodies of water LIGHT BLUE and the rivers in PURPLE on the Physical Map. • Night Three: Wed Dec 4 • Label the landforms in RED pen written horizontally and color in the deserts in LIGHT ORANGE and the mountains in LIGHT BROWN on the Physical Map. • Go back and edit your work.

  5. Day Two: Tuesday, December 3, 2013 • Class: Ms. Barben is going to continue her Geography of Africa Powerpoint, and you should continue to take notes in the provided graphic organizer. • Homework: Continue to label and color the Political and Physical Maps of Africa

  6. Day Three: Wednesday, December 4, 2013 • Class: Ms. Barben is going to continue her Geography of Africa Powerpoint, and you should continue to take notes in the provided graphic organizer. • Homework: Finish the labeling and color-coding of the Physical Map of Africa.

Day Four: Thursday, December 5, 2013 • Groups: You will be broken up into groups and need to split the Aswan Dam Powerpoint and Supplemental Reading up into smaller parts and assign to each group member. • Supplemental Reading: pages 1-16 • Powerpoint: pages 2-52 • It is the group member’s responsibility to read and take notes on the positives and negatives of the Aswan Dam on the provided handout. • This is to be finished up as homework.

  8. Day Five: Friday, December 6, 2013 • Groups: Do the reading/note-taking share of the positives and negatives. • Make sure everyone has complete notes. • You have half the class period to do this.

Day Five: Friday, December 6, 2013 • Groups: Formative Assessment----We are going to do a Role Play Simulation over the controversial Aswan Dam built on the Nile River. • Was the building of the Aswan Dam the right thing to do for the continent? • Why or why not? • Roles: • Burundi • Rwanda • Tanzania • Kenya • Uganda • Democratic Republic of Congo • Ethiopia • Eritrea • Sudan • Egypt

Day Five: Friday, December 6, 2013 • Tasks: • Read your country’s profile. • Then as your assigned country, decide on what position your country would take on the Aswan Dam and examine the reasons and evidence why. • Write down this information on the oaktag poster board. • Title: Country and Position on Dam • Reasons with Evidence for Each Argument

  11. Day Six: Monday, December 9, 2013 • Groups: You have 15 minutes to finish your Country’s Position Poster. • Class: Rest of class the groups will present to the class. Students should add to the pros/cons handout on the Aswan Dam. • Homework: Work on Africa Unit Study Guide.
