Beginning the IEP Process CDE DPS • DPS Child Find Teams locate, identify, and evaluate children with special needs in Denver • Ages 3-5 team • K-21 team • Parent Referral – if a parent requests sped evaluation, they must sign permission to test: • student must be evaluated within 60 days of signing • IEP mtg must take place within 90 days of signing • School Referral – if a student has received interventions through the RTI process, but does not respond sufficiently to instruction, the student may be referred to Special Education • parent permission must be obtained to evaluate

Child is Evaluated • After the School or Parent Referral – The multidisciplinary team proceeds with the assessments in the following areas: • Educational – YOU assess academic achievement • Cognitive – Psychologist assesses how the child learns • Social/Emotional Functioning – Social worker assesses social history based on parent interview and staff functioning observation, including the adaptive behaviors of the student (self-care, social skills) • Speech/Language – Speech Language Pathologist assesses speech production, and expressive/receptive language skills. • Health – Nurse assesses health history and current condition • Motor – Occupational therapist assesses fine & gross motor skills • Not always necessary – • determine necessity before permission to test is received

Eligibility is determined at the “Initial Staffing” IEP Meeting, then IEP document is completed • BEFORE the “Initial Staffing” IEP Meeting: • You (case manager) set the date • - coordinate w/ parents & providers • You invite IEP team & interpreter, if required • You finish your evaluation report and ensure the entire multidisciplinary team has done the same • You may discuss evaluation results with other service providers, but you MAY NOT discuss eligibility determination • You prepare the IEP paperwork necessary for the meeting

Eligibility is determined at the “Initial Staffing” IEP Meeting, then IEP document is completed • DURING the “Initial Staffing” IEP Meeting: • You facilitate the meeting • The IEP team communicates evaluation results to parents • The IEP team determines eligibility • The IEP team determines services to be provided, accommodations to be put into place, goals

  11. Beginning the IEP Process CDE DPS 3. Eligibility is determined at the “Initial Staffing” IEP Meeting, then IEP document is completed • Immediately AFTER the “Initial Staffing” IEP Meeting: • You complete the IEP paperwork

  12. Implementing and Reviewing the IEP • Services and accommodations are provided • Reviews for ongoing implementation
