  3. Human Body SystemsChapter 35.1

  4. The Players • The levels of organization in a multicellular organism from smallest to largest are: • cell→ tissue → organ → organ system

  5. Now let’s take a closer look at the players… • Cell • Tissue • Organ • Organ system

  6. Cell • Basic unit of structure and function in an organism • Specialized cells • are uniquely suited to perform a particular function

  7. Tissue • A group of cells that perform a single function • Four basic types of tissues: • Muscle: allows body to move • Epithelial: glands and tissues that cover interior and exterior body surfaces • Connective: provides support for the body • Nervous: transmits nerve impulses

  8. What is the purpose of each of these items? Plastic Wrap Electrical Wire Packaging Tape

  9. What type of tissue is represented by each item? Plastic Wrap Electrical Wire Packaging Tape epithelial nervous connective

  10. Organ / Organ Systems • Organ -group of different types of tissues that work together to perform a single function • Organ systems -group of organs that perform closely related functions

  11. Questions • Can you name some organs found in the human body? • What are some of the functions of these organs? • Can you name the 11 organ systems found in the human body? • What are the main functions of each organ system?

  12. The Organ Systems • 11 different organ systems are organized in the body • 1. Nervous • 2. Integumentary • 3. Skeletal • 4. Muscular • 5. Circulatory • 6. Respiratory • 7. Digestive • 8. Excretory • 9. Endocrine • 10. Reproductive • 11. Immune
