A Glimpse of Poverty • Today, 330 million people are hungry! • 43.7 million people, of which 70% in Africa, are infected with HIV/AIDS. • 1.2 billion young adolescents and youth are in the labor market • with no skills and opportunities for productive livelihoods • 2 billion people live with no access to electricity • 1 billion with no access to clean water and sanitation • About 50% of the women in developing countries have no access to resources like education and credit. Feminization of poverty.

  3. IDEAS mission is to contribute to the economic development of the poor through providing services to: • microfinance institutions (MFIs) • other development organizations • socially responsible investors interested in developing countries

  4. Micro finance is an effective strategy to alleviate poverty & empower women

Microfinance is Growing Rapidly Worldwide • 80% of the businesses in Latin America have fewer than 10 employees. 130 million are employed in these microenterprises. • Some 50 million tiny businesses provide much of the services and goods used in Latin America • Microfinance began about 25 years ago with Gramen Bank in Bangladesh being one of the first

  6. Usually microfinance uses one of three models: solidarity groups, communal banks or individual loans • Microfinance provides credit on more reasonable terms than the loan sharks.

  7. New specialized institutions provide microfinance services • Variety of different types of microcredit • Savings mechanisms • Life or health insurance schemes • Business training and marketing services specifically designed for very poor entrepreneurs.

  8. IDEAS is providing assistance to make the microfinance institutions (MFIs) more viable and effective in helping the poor help themselves We do this through: • Training • Technical Assistance • Evaluating insti-tutions & projects

IDEAS teaches evaluation skills to staff in developing countries To help them learn techniques to listen to the poor entrepreneurs so they can learn: • To more accurately measure the market demand for their products and services • To assess the impact of their services • To determine to what degree the poor are satisfied with the services being offered

OTHER SERVICES PROVIDED BY IDEAS • CAPACITY BUILDING FOR YOUNGER DEVELOPING COUNTRY PROFESSIONALS • Teaching specialized UNIVERSITY COURSES and setting up INSTITUTES • Bi-monthly Spanish-language NEWSLETTER called MicroEval • WEB SITE (www.ideasnet.org) • Production and translation of EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS used in our trainings

  12. HOW THE IDEAS TEAM IS STRUCTURED • Operates primarily from offices in El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Georgia • Have associate consultants on call in developing countries like Ethiopia • Mobilization of consultants to cover other areas

  16. HOW YOU CAN BE INVOLVED • Promote travel seminars for potential donors or investors to microfinance • Encourage professionals to assist developing country persons to get involved in solving their own problems • Invest in microfinance and fair trade businesses
