The generals are a lot of fogeys . . . I’m, the nucleus of the new army Ernst Rohm, drunk in 1934, quoted by H Rauschning in his book Hitler speaks (1940)

  4. With an SS escort, the Fuhrer knocked gently on Rohm’s door: “A message from Munich”, he said in a disguised voice. “Come in” Rohm shouted, “the door is open”. Hitler tore open the door, fell on Rohm as he lay on the bed, grabbed him by the throat and screamed, “you are under arrest, you pig!” Then he turned him over to the SS Extracts fro Alfred Rosenbergs diary. He was a leading Nazi politician. Hitler claimed that 61 had been executed while 13 had been shot resisting arrest and three had committed suicide. Others have argued that as many as 400 people were killed during the purge.

  5. An SS guardsman. SS stood for Schutzstaffel. It was created in 1925 as Hitler personal bodyguard. To remember which came first the SA or the SS remember them alphabetically. SA replaced bySS
